East Asian lake hydrology modulated by global sea-level variations in the Eocene warmhouse

Yiquan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates four terrestrial basins in mid-latitudes of East Asia, refining the cyclostratigraphy of the middle-late Eocene and deciphering high-resolution lake hydrological changes. It reveals that lake-level changes were influenced by global climate changes, and global sea-level variations may drive hydroclimate and freshwater resources in East Asia during the Eocene.

Sedimentary noise modeling of lake-level change in the Late Triassic Newark Basin of North America

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: Two competing hypotheses, glacioeustasy and groundwater aquifer eustasy, were evaluated for their impact on global sea-level changes during the Late Triassic. Sedimentary noise modeling and principal component analysis were used to reconstruct lake level fluctuations, revealing a link between million-year scale lake-level variations and astronomical forcing. This study highlights the importance of high-resolution, objective reconstructions of sea- and lake-levels for further testing these hypotheses under warm conditions.

Geochemistry of macrofossil, bulk rock and secondary calcite in the Early Jurassic strata of the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) drill core, Cardigan Bay Basin, Wales, UK

Clemens V. Ullmann et al.

Summary: The mudrock core from Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) in Wales, UK, has the potential to establish an integrated stratigraphic scheme for the Early Jurassic Epoch. Differences in lithology are primarily driven by changes in carbonate content, affecting geochemical and physical properties. The marine macrofossil record at Mochras shows similarities with other UK basins, but potential significant differences exist, possibly due to habitat structures or paleoceanographic variations.

New age constraints on the Lower Jurassic Pliensbachian-Toarcian Boundary at Chacay Melehue (Neuquen Basin, Argentina)

Aisha H. Al-Suwaidi et al.

Summary: The Pliensbachian-Toarcian boundary interval is characterized by a significant negative carbon-isotope excursion (CIE) in various marine and terrestrial archives, indicating a global disturbance to the carbon cycle. A new high-resolution organic-carbon isotope record from the Arroyo Chacay Melehue section in Argentina confirms the global significance of this anomaly. It also provides precise age assignments for the boundary and zonal boundaries using U-Pb zircon geochronology and a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) stratigraphic age model.

Early Jurassic coccolith diversification and response to pre-Toarcian environmental changes: A perspective from the Paris Basin

L. Peti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the early Jurassic nannofossil assemblages in the Paris Basin and explores the links between climate change, ocean nutrient concentrations, and the abundance and diversity of calcareous nannoplankton. The results suggest that factors such as cold conditions, open ocean conditions, and high fertility levels influence the evolution and distribution of calcareous nannoplankton.

Global organic carbon burial during the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event: Patterns and controls

David B. Kemp et al.

Summary: In this study, total organic carbon (TOC) data from 67 lower Toarcian sections were compiled to reconstruct the pattern of organic enrichment during the early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE). The findings suggest that redox conditions and sedimentation rates were major controls on organic enrichment and burial rates. Globally, there was a significant increase in TOC at most sites during the T-OAE.

Astronomical forcing of lake evolution in the Lanzhou Basin during early Miocene period

Zhixiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study presents evidence of orbital-scale variability of the East Asian summer monsoon in the early Miocene period, with dominant cyclical patterns of approximately 100 kyr eccentricity. This variability is linked to Antarctic ice sheet modulations and changes in weathering intensity in the Lanzhou Basin, possibly influenced by changes in westerly moisture due to orogenic barriers and uplift of NE Tibet during the late Oligocene-early Miocene period.

Organic carbon burial is paced by a ∼173-ka obliquity cycle in the middle to high latitudes

He Huang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a cyclical pattern of approximately 173 thousand years in organic carbon burial processes in middle to high latitudes. This signal is amplified by internal climate feedbacks of the carbon cycle under different geographic and climate conditions, controlling a series of sensitive climatic processes. The presence of the obliquity amplitude modulation (AM) cycle during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic is confirmed by new and compiled records from multiple proxies.
