Effects of redox variability and early diagenesis on marine sedimentary Hg records

J. Frieling et al.

Summary: Volcanism is a significant natural source of mercury, and sedimentary mercury content has been used to reconstruct volcanic activity. However, the factors controlling sedimentary mercury content are not well understood. It is essential to understand these factors for the accurate use of mercury as a proxy for volcanic activity.

Mercury evidence for combustion of organic-rich sediments during the end-Triassic crisis

Jun Shen et al.

Summary: By analyzing a section in Japan, researchers have found that the isotopically light carbon released during the end-Triassic mass extinction may have come from the combustion of organic-rich sediments, rather than deep-Earth volcanic gases.

Degradation of Hg signals on incipient weathering: Core versus outcrop geochemistry of Upper Permian shales, East Greenland and Mid-Norwegian Shelf

Junhee Park et al.

Summary: This study finds that incipient weathering leads to decreased mercury content and mercury to total organic carbon ratios in shale rocks, masking the primary mercury signals. Therefore, the presence and effects of weathering should be taken into consideration before discussing mercury signals in sedimentary rocks.

Mercury loss and isotope fractionation during thermal maturation of organic-rich mudrocks

Zeyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in mercury concentration and isotopic composition during thermal maturation process, as well as its impact on organic-rich shales. The experiments reveal significant mercury loss and variations in isotopic composition during thermal maturation. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for caution when using mercury and isotopes as proxies for paleoclimate and paleoceanography reconstruction in sediments that have experienced significant thermal alteration.

High-precision U-Pb age constraints on the Permian floral turnovers, paleoclimate change, and tectonics of the North China block

Qiong Wu et al.

Summary: The Permian marine-terrestrial system of the North China block provides insights into the evolution of northern temperate ecosystems during the transition from icehouse to greenhouse. Through high-precision U-Pb geochronology, it was found that the dominance of continental red beds, aridification of climate, and disappearance of coals and tropical flora in the North China block occurred earlier than previously thought. A long hiatus in the early Kungurian to mid-Guadalupian was associated with tectonic convergence and led to the loss of diverse Cathaysian floras and invasion of monotonous Angaran floras under arid conditions. Volcanism during the Cisuralian may have played a role in global warming and aridification after the late Paleozoic ice age.

Determining the style and provenance of magmatic activity during the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a)

L. M. E. Percival et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of Large Igneous Province (LIP) activity in triggering the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a) and emphasizes the importance of the Greater Ontong-Java Plateau (G-OJP). Globally consistent evidence of LIP activity during OAE 1a is indicated, but geographical variations in mercury trends were observed. The findings suggest that G-OJP emissions of mantle carbon were more likely to have played a major role in initiating OAE 1a than thermogenic volatiles associated with High Arctic LIP (HALIP).

Fifty years of volcanic mercury emission research: Knowledge gaps and future directions

Brock A. Edwards et al.

Summary: Volcanism is a potentially important natural source of mercury (Hg) to the environment, but its impact on the global Hg cycle is poorly understood, leading to uncertainty in assessing the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic Hg sources to the global atmosphere. Research shows that arc volcanoes emit 3-fold higher Hg fluxes on average compared to non-arc volcanoes, despite the latter having significantly higher Hg concentrations in their plumes.

Assessing the importance of thermogenic degassing from the Karoo Large Igneous Province (LIP) in driving Toarcian carbon cycle perturbations

Thea H. Heimdal et al.

Summary: The study explores the role of the Karoo Large Igneous Province in the Toarcian crisis, finding that the thermogenic carbon released during its formation serves as a plausible source for the negative carbon isotope excursions, without the need for an extremely isotopically depleted carbon source such as methane clathrates to explain this phenomenon.

Examining the relationship between Tmax and vitrinite reflectance: An empirical comparison between thermal maturity indicators

Jonathan C. Evenick

Summary: Rock-eval pyrolysis data have been used for over 40 years to evaluate thermal maturity and source rock potential. A large dataset of 33,732 measurements from 903 publications was used to test the relationship between Tmax, HI, PI, and Ro, revealing a positive correlation between Tmax and Ro with considerable scatter. A new equation Ro = (0.013 x Tmax) - 5.0 was proposed with an R-2 value of 0.22, showing potential improvement over previous equations.

The life cycle of large igneous provinces

Benjamin A. Black et al.

Summary: Major environmental disruptions in Earth's history are often associated with large igneous provinces (LIPs), which involve mantle melting, magmatic activity, and volatile release. Understanding the evolution of LIPs is crucial for unraveling the connections between crustal magmatism, gas release, and environmental changes. Studying the mechanisms of LIPs can provide insights into how large-scale magmatic systems interact with the lithosphere and influence environmental shifts.
