Mass-dependent fractionation of titanium stable isotopes during intensive weathering of basalts

Xinyue He et al.

Summary: This study measured and analyzed the titanium isotope compositions of a weathering profile on Hainan Island, China, and found that the titanium isotope compositions are relatively stable during water-rock interactions but exhibit fractionation during extreme weathering processes. The composition of titanium isotopes in this profile is controlled by the formation and dissolution of minerals.

Re-initiation of plutonism at the Gondwana margin after a magmatic hiatus: The bimodal Permian-Triassic Longwood Suite, New Zealand

A. J. McCoy-West et al.

Summary: The Tuhua Intrusives in New Zealand provide evidence of Phanerozoic subduction and crustal growth at the Gondwana margin. Among them, the Longwood Suite of gabbroic and trondhjemitic intrusions stands out for its isotopic and chemical characteristics. New U-Pb ages, trace element analyses, and Sr-Nd isotope compositions of the Longwood Suite are presented. The results confirm the restricted time range and expand the known distribution of the Longwood Suite. The geochemical characteristics indicate that the granitoids of the Longwood Suite were generated by shallow melting of an amphibolitic residue, suggesting relatively thin lithosphere. The petrotectonic model suggests that the Gondwana continental margin crust was underplated by Permian intra-oceanic island arc crust and mantle lithosphere, which subsequently melted to form the isotopically primitive gabbroic and trondhjemitic plutons of the Longwood Suite.

Gallium isotope constraints on the intense weathering of basalt

Wei Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of gallium (Ga) isotopes to trace continental weathering by studying a strongly-weathered latosol profile in South China. The results show significant variations in Ga isotope compositions and concentrations, suggesting the sensitivity of Ga isotopes in reflecting the loss of aluminum (Al) and involvement of iron (Fe) during weathering processes. The study highlights the importance of Ga elemental and isotope geochemistry in tracing continental weathering and global Ga cycling.

Assessing neodymium isotopes as an ocean circulation tracer in the Southwest Atlantic

Yingzhe Wu et al.

Summary: The global overturning ocean circulation is crucial for global climate and can be traced using neodymium (Nd) isotopes. However, the value of Nd isotopes as a circulation tracer has been questioned due to various processes that can modify seawater Nd isotope ratios. This study investigates the integrity of Nd isotopes as an ocean circulation tracer in the Southwest Atlantic and confirms their potential for reconstructing past ocean circulation changes.

The chondritic neodymium stable isotope composition of the Earth inferred from mid-ocean ridge, ocean island and arc basalts

Alex J. McCoy-West et al.

Summary: The study conducted neodymium stable isotope analyses on various types of basalts globally, revealing that mid-ocean ridge basalts have a very uniform composition, while ocean island and continental intraplate basalts have more variable compositions, related to the varying incorporation of recycled materials in their source regions. Island arc basalts from New Britain reflect the complex interplay between source composition, degree of melting, and slab-fluid inputs.

Summary: This study presents significant variations in delta Rb-87 in both bulk samples and individual mineral species from a granite weathering profile in South China, as well as in nearby stream water. The data demonstrates the complex dynamics of Rb isotope fractionation during geological processes, with a crucial role played by the adsorption and desorption of clay minerals.
