A cholesteric liquid crystal smart window with a low operating voltage

Seung-Won Oh et al.

Summary: A dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal smart window with a haze-free opaque state is demonstrated. The window utilizes a random stripe pattern called the fingerprint (FP) texture as its initial state, which has a slightly higher transmittance than the twisted state but much lower than the homogeneously aligned state. Additionally, the proposed LC cell shows the lowest operating voltage among guest-host liquid crystal cells due to vertical anchoring at the surfaces.

PDLC with controllable microstructure using wavelength-selective two-stage polymerization

Hongbo Lu et al.

Summary: A new method of wavelength-selective, two-stage acrylate-thiol polymerization has been developed for the formation of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. By controlling the reaction time and initiator content, the morphology of the PDLC films can be adjusted from porous to microsphere structure, improving the contrast ratio (CR) and adhesion. This method provides an effective way to control the microstructure of acrylate-thiol polymers in solution polymerization, and has significant implications for large, flexible displays, switchable windows, and light valves.

Fast dual-mode switchable smart window based on the dual-frequency liquid crystal electrohydrodynamic instability

Hongbo Lu et al.

Summary: In the past decade, liquid crystals have become a focus of research for switchable smart windows. Dual-frequency liquid crystals (DFLCs) are widely studied and applied in fast-response liquid crystal devices. In this study, it is found that DFLCs scatter light when a voltage frequency close to its crossover frequency is applied, and the underlying principle of this phenomenon is investigated. Experimental results demonstrate that the scattering of light is a dynamic process caused by ion perturbation. Based on these findings, a double-layer liquid crystal shutter is prepared, which can be quickly switched between transparent, dark, and scattering states solely by changing the voltage frequency, offering a useful application in privacy-protecting smart windows. DFLCs are combined with dynamic scattering to accelerate the response time of the scattering.

Electrically actuated visible and near-infrared regulating switchable smart window for energy positive building: A review

Srijita Nundy et al.

Summary: Buildings consume fossil fuel generated electricity for air conditioning, heating, and artificial lighting, which can be offset by using energy efficient advanced switchable smart windows. Electrically actuated switchable smart window systems, including electrochromic, suspended particle device, and liquid crystal, have different power supply requirements. Stakeholder support, particularly from government and building regulations, is essential for the smooth integration of smart windows into the building sector.
