Impact of Pregnancy and Vitamin A Supplementation on CYP2D6 Activity

Ogochukwu U. Amaeze et al.

Summary: This study assessed the changes in CYP2D6 and CYP3A activities during pregnancy and postpartum, and the effect of vitamin A administration on CYP2D6 activity. The results showed increased CYP2D6 and CYP3A activities during pregnancy, with no significant effect of vitamin A supplementation on CYP2D6 activity. Plasma concentrations of all-trans retinoic acid were positively correlated with increased CYP2D6 activity during pregnancy and postpartum. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of increased CYP2D6 activity during pregnancy.

Temporal changes in the systemic concentrations of retinoids in pregnant and postpartum women

Hyunyoung Jeong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in systemic retinoid levels during pregnancy. Blood samples from 20 healthy pregnant women were analyzed, revealing significant decreases in 13-cis-retinoic acid levels during pregnancy, with rebound increases in retinol and 13-cis-retinoic acid levels after delivery. Additionally, all-trans-retinoic acid levels peaked in mid-pregnancy. The comprehensive profiling of retinoid levels provides insights into the metabolism and homeostasis of vitamin A during pregnancy.

The Effects of Pregnancy on Amino Acid Levels and Nitrogen Disposition

Luke E. F. Enthoven et al.

Summary: Limited data exists on the effects of pregnancy on the maternal metabolome. This study used metabolomics analysis to identify pathways affected by pregnancy and confirmed changes in amino acid metabolism. The study found alterations in urea nitrogen disposition, amino acid metabolism, and potential implications for diseases of pregnancy and nitric oxide production.

Recognition of asymptomatic hypercholanemia of pregnancy: Different clinical features, fetal outcomes and bile acids metabolism from intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy

Yifan He et al.

Summary: The risk of adverse fetal outcomes was significantly higher in the AHP group compared to normal pregnancies but lower than the ICP group. Multivariate statistics analysis revealed distinct serum BAs metabolic profiling among the three groups, with elevated levels of deoxycholic acid species in the AHP group. Overall, AHP had unique clinical features and serum BAs metabolism compared to ICP and normal pregnancies.

Molecular Regulation of Bile Acid Homeostasis

Supratim Choudhuri et al.

Summary: Bile acids play a crucial role in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins, and they also impact fat, glucose, and energy metabolism. This review highlights the regulation of bile acid synthesis, transport, and homeostasis, as well as the importance of bile acids in modulating intermediary metabolism. Understanding these mechanisms has potential implications for the development of treatments for hepatic and intestinal diseases, as well as metabolic syndrome.

Plasma Retinoid Concentrations Are Altered in Pregnant Women

Lindsay C. Czuba et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the changes in maternal vitamin A levels during pregnancy. The findings reveal that plasma retinol concentrations are lower, but all-trans-retinoic acid concentrations are higher during pregnancy.

Glycine, a Dispensable Amino Acid, Is Conditionally Indispensable in Late Stages of Human Pregnancy

Betina F. Rasmussen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether healthy pregnant women at midgestation and late gestation have a dietary demand for glycine, a dispensable amino acid. The results demonstrated that in late gestation, lower glycine intakes resulted in lower protein synthesis rates and lower glycine availability.

Bile acids during pregnancy: Trimester variations and associations with glucose homeostasis

Marianne Gagnon et al.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize changes in bile acids metabolism during pregnancy and evaluate their associations with glucose homeostasis indexes. Results showed an increase in total bile acids during pregnancy, which were positively associated with elevated insulin resistance indexes.
