Nanotechnology based drug delivery systems for the treatment of anterior segment eye diseases

Summary: Diseases affecting the anterior segment of the eye are a major cause of vision impairment and blindness worldwide. Drug delivery to the eye through the topical ocular route is challenging due to structural and physiological constraints. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems have been investigated as effective alternatives to conventional ocular delivery systems for treating anterior segment diseases. This review discusses different nanotechnology-based delivery systems and their prospects in clinical use.

Tailoring surface properties of liposomes for dexamethasone intraocular administration

Summary: To enhance the delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs to the posterior eye segment, researchers developed liposomes with an engineered surface and found that polyethylene glycol-distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine (PEG(2kDa)-DSPE) reduced the liposomes' zeta potential, restored their diffusivity in the vitreous, and increased their anti-inflammatory effect on retinal cells.

Ocular Drug Delivery: a Comprehensive Review

This review provides insights into eye anatomy, ocular diseases, obstacles to drug delivery, advantages and drawbacks of different routes of administration and dosage forms, and advancements in ocular delivery.

Summary: Diabetic cataract is a major cause of visual impairment for diabetic patients. Current drug delivery approaches and pharmacologic interventions for controlling diabetic cataract progression are limited, especially non-invasive strategies involving eye drops. This study developed a novel nanoformulation using antioxidant curcumin and cerium oxide nanoparticles to treat diabetic cataract complications by improving redox and anti-glycation potential. The nanoformulation exhibited effective antioxidant and anti-glycation properties in protecting lens epithelial cells and showed no toxicity in vivo.

In vivo experiments showed that the VA-loaded Spanlastic formulation significantly reduced inflammation compared to the drug suspension.
