Insights into adsorption of ammonium by biochar derived from low temperature pyrolysis of coffee husk

Ngoc-Thuy Vu et al.

Summary: This study produced biochar from coffee husk and found that it had a high adsorption capacity for ammonium. The adsorption process of coffee husk biochar was influenced by factors such as contact time, pH, ammonium concentration, and solid/liquid ratio. Batch experiments also confirmed the ability of coffee husk biochar to partially remove ammonium from wastewater.

Summary: Indiscriminate waste discharge into water bodies has led to increased water pollution. Therefore, there is a need to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly nanomaterials for wastewater treatment. In this study, rice husk activated carbon (RHAC) was loaded with freshly prepared ZnO nanoparticles, resulting in RHAC-ZnO-NC. The findings suggest that RHAC-ZnO-NC is a promising material for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation.

Strategy for optimizing the synthesis and characterization of activated carbons obtained by chemical activation of coffee husk

Alvine Mirabelle Soukoua Ngueabouo et al.

Summary: The present study aims to optimize the parameters for preparing activated carbon from coffee husk and analyze its properties. Chemical activation using phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide as activating agents was employed. The optimal parameters were determined as follows: for activation with KOH, the activation temperature was 300°C, residence time was 120 min, activating agent concentration was 0.1 mol/L, iodine number was 603.45 mg/g, and yield was 59.054%; for activation with H3PO4, the activation temperature was 600°C, residence time was 120 min, activating agent concentration was 0.1 mol/L, iodine number was 520.65 mg/g, and yield was 67.236%. The resulting activated carbons exhibited a porous structure and high specific surface area, making them suitable for the production of porous materials.
