Overlapping infection of Nocardia farcinica and Aspergillus fumigatus in a child with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease: a case report

Xiyan Tian et al.

Summary: This case report describes the identification of overlapping infection of Nocardia farcinica and Aspergillus fumigatus in a Chinese child with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (X-CGD) using metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing is recommended as an important approach for microbial identification when traditional detection methods are unable to diagnose infectious pathogens. Patients with X-CGD have a poor prognosis, and early diagnosis and intervention may reduce mortality.

Synergistic Activity of Imipenem in Combination with Ceftazidime/Avibactam or Avibactam against Non-MBL-Producing Extensively Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Yulin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study describes the genomic mechanism of resistance for ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) nonsusceptible extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (XDRPA) strains. It also demonstrates the synergistic antibacterial activity of CZA-imipenem combination against non-MBL-producing XDRPA.

Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of the Nocardia Species in China, 2009 to 2021

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the species distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Nocardia strains in China. The strains were mainly collected from the lower respiratory tract and skin tissues, and showed susceptibility to linezolid, amikacin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Different Nocardia species exhibited varying resistance profiles to other antibiotics.

A case of multiple abscesses caused by Nocardia farcinica rapidly diagnosed by MALDI-TOF MS

Shota Yonetani et al.

Summary: This case report describes a patient with nocardiosis characterized by multiple disseminated abscesses. Nocardia farcinica was successfully isolated and identified using MALDI-TOF MS, and radiological assessment revealed the presence of abscesses in the brain, lung, and thigh. Accurate species identification aided in the effective treatment of nocardiosis.

How do I manage nocardiosis?

Ili Margalit et al.

Summary: Nocardiosis, a rare infection, primarily affects immunocompromised individuals, commonly involving the lungs and potentially spreading to other sites. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is the preferred initial therapy due to its high susceptibility against Nocardia, being a cornerstone of treatment for years.

Clinical Presentation, Management, and Outcomes of Patients With Brain Abscess due to Nocardia Species

Cristina Corsini Campioli et al.

Summary: Nocardial brain abscesses are rare and significant, predominantly occurring in immunocompromised patients. Early diagnostic and therapeutic measures are essential for improving patient outcomes and achieving source control.

Whole genome sequencing reveals the genomic diversity, taxonomic classification, and evolutionary relationships of the genus Nocardia

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: Nocardia is a complex genus of aerobic actinomycetes with misunderstood clinical presentations, but a study on its pan-genome clarified genetic diversity and proposed a high-accuracy phylogenomic approach leading to the discovery of new species and reclassification of strains. Additionally, a novel locus for inferring phylogeny was identified, enhancing insight into the evolutionary relationships within this genus.
