Stem cell-derived and circulating exosomal microRNAs as new potential tools for diabetic nephropathy management

Lei Peng et al.

Summary: Diabetic nephropathy remains the most common cause of end-stage renal disease, and early diagnosis and treatment can slow down its progression. Circulating levels of kidney-released exosomes and biomolecules have shown potential in predicting the occurrence and progression of diabetic nephropathy. Stem cell therapy and medications targeting inflammatory, oxidant, or pro-fibrotic pathways are being investigated as potential treatments.

Soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 is associated with progressive diabetic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Summary: This study investigates the prognostic value of sTNFR2 in patients with type 2 diabetes and early nephropathy. The results suggest that serum sTNFR2 levels are strongly associated with the risk of renal function decline and progressive changes in albuminuria.

Circulating beta 2 and alpha 1 microglobulins predict progression of nephropathy in diabetic patients: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Alieh Gholaminejad et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the association between circulating beta 2 and alpha 1 microglobulins and the progression of diabetic nephropathy. The results showed that elevated levels of B2M and A1M were associated with an increased risk of DN in diabetic patients, suggesting that they could be potential predictors of DN progression.

Novel Risk Factors for Progression of Diabetic and Nondiabetic CKD: Findings From the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study

Amanda H. Anderson et al.

Summary: This study identified strong associations between certain cardiac markers, plasma CXCL12, and urinary NGAL with an increased risk of CKD progression, comparable to the well-established risk factor of systolic blood pressure >= 140 mm Hg. Further investigation into the potential mechanisms indicated by these markers is warranted for improving risk stratification.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of therapeutic methods and clinicopathologic variables with prognosis of DN patients in stage 4 CKD, and showed that specific therapies did not effectively delay the onset of ESRD.

Comprehensive analysis of diabetic nephropathy expression profile based on weighted gene co-expression network analysis algorithm

Alieh Gholaminejad et al.

Summary: This study utilized the WGCNA algorithm to analyze a DN microarray dataset, identifying six co-expression modules with significant DEGs. Functional enrichment analyses and PPI network constructions revealed key biological processes and pathways such as metabolic processes, cell cycle control, and apoptosis. Hub genes, including FN1, SLC2A2, FABP1, EHHADH and PIPOX, were validated and a regulatory network involving upstream regulators such as mir-27a and REAL was constructed, providing new insights into DN pathogenesis.
