Diabetes duration and the risk of dementia: a cohort study based on German health claims data

Constantin Reinke et al.

Summary: This study found a non-linear association between the duration of type 2 diabetes and the risk of dementia. After the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, the risk of dementia decreased in the first year, reached the lowest point at 4.75 years, and then increased again. This pattern was consistent across different treatment groups.

Type 2 Diabetes, Glycemic Control, and Their Association With Dementia and Its Major Subtypes: Findings From the Swedish National Diabetes Register

Carlos A. Celis-Morales et al.

Summary: This study suggests that there is an association between type 2 diabetes and different subtypes of dementia, with the strongest association observed for vascular dementia. Additionally, poor glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing vascular and nonvascular dementia.

Severe Hypoglycemia Increases Dementia Risk and Related Mortality: A Nationwide, Population-based Cohort Study

Eugene Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between severe hypoglycemia and dementia subtypes, as well as their combined effect on overall mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results indicate that severe hypoglycemia is associated with dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, and the combination of severe hypoglycemia and dementia leads to higher overall mortality.

Potential of prevention strategies for the modifiable risk factor type 2 diabetes with relation to the future number of dementia patients in Germany- a multi-state projection through 2040

Anne Fink et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of diabetes prevention strategies on the future number of dementia patients in Germany. The results showed that a relative reduction in death rates and dementia incidence in the non-diabetic population would increase the number of dementia cases to 3.38 million by 2040. However, a relative reduction in diabetes incidence and dementia incidence among diabetes patients would result in a decrease in dementia cases by 240,000.

Summary: FG variability is associated with the risk of dementia, increasing FG-VIM quartiles are positively correlated with increased dementia risk. This association is more pronounced in patients with less favorable metabolic profiles.

Association of metformin use with Alzheimer's disease in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes: a population-based nested case-control study

Junghee Ha et al.

Summary: Based on a retrospective study, treatment with metformin is associated with an increased risk of AD, especially in patients with longer duration of diabetes and comorbid depression. A double-blinded, prospective study is needed to determine the long-term cognitive safety of metformin, considering the large number of patients worldwide taking this medication.

Association of Thyroid Dysfunction With Cognitive Function An Individual Participant Data Analysis

Nicolien A. van Vliet et al.

Summary: In this study of over 74,000 adults, subclinical hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism were not found to be associated with cognitive function, cognitive decline, or incident dementia. The role of overt thyroid dysfunction in dementia risk remains inconclusive, and screening for subclinical thyroid dysfunction in older adults for cognitive decline is not supported based on these findings.
