Conformational transitions and ligand-binding to a muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

Eleftherios Zarkadas et al.

Summary: This study used cryo-EM to determine the structure of the muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptor from the electric fish Torpedo. The results shed light on the structural changes and functional states of the receptor, uncovering the important role of subunits in channel gating and explaining the lower potency of nicotine at muscle nicotinic receptors compared to neuronal ones.

Behavioral genetics of alcohol's effects in three zebrafish (Danio rerio) populations

Thais Agues-Barbosa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chronic alcohol exposure in three zebrafish populations and found that different populations respond differently to alcohol, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying alcohol use and dependence. The results suggest that inbred populations may be useful in understanding alcohol use and abuse mechanisms, while a more diverse genetic background may contribute to higher variability in behavior and mRNA expression.

Differences in the Alcohol Preference Assessment of Shy and Bold Zebrafish

Marina Sanson Bellot et al.

Summary: Individuals differ in their preference for alcohol and propensity to develop alcoholism, where the behavioral profile, such as the bold-shy axis, plays an important role for such a difference. Translational studies using animal models, such as zebrafish, can help identify behavioral traits that predispose individuals to drink alcohol compulsively. This study investigated the preference for alcohol in two distinct traits in zebrafish: shy and bold. Results showed that the conditioned place preference paradigm may not be sufficient for shy fish to choose, indicating the need to consider behavioral profiles in further studies.

Cotreatment of Small Gold Nanoparticles Protects Against the Increase in Cerebral Acetylcholinesterase Activity and Oxidative Stress Induced by Acute Ethanol Exposure in the Zebrafish

Carolina Antunes Torres et al.

Summary: Gold nanoparticles (GNP) have a modulatory effect on acetylcholinesterase activity and oxidative stress in the brain of zebrafish. Co-treatment with GNP can prevent the adverse effects of EtOH on zebrafish when treated simultaneously.

Modulating the Neuromodulators: Dopamine, Serotonin, and the Endocannabinoid System

Kate Z. Peters et al.

Summary: Dopamine, serotonin, and endocannabinoids play crucial roles in motivated behavior, including reward processing and reinforcement learning. The interactions between these neuromodulatory systems are complex, and recent evidence suggests potential new relationships between them, challenging longstanding views. Advanced technologies for precise identification and control of genetically targeted neuronal populations are crucial for understanding the intricate relationship between these essential systems and their impact on motivated behavior.
