Beyond the exponential horn: a bush-cricket with ear canals which function as coupled resonators

Emine Celiker et al.

Summary: This study reveals the working mechanism of the coupled resonators in the acoustic trachea of bush-crickets and their sound pressure gain at specific frequencies. Despite sexual dimorphism, both male and female bush-crickets have similar biophysical mechanisms in their acoustic trachea.

imilar songs, but different mate localization strategies of the three species of Phaneroptera occurring in Western Europe (Orthoptera: Phaneropteridae)

Klaus-Gerhard Heller et al.

Summary: In bush-crickets, males produce calling songs to attract females, who respond by either engaging in a duet or approaching the male. Different species exhibit distinct behaviors after acoustical contact, with some engaging in duets while others responding selectively to certain elements of the male song. The adaptive nature of these different strategies in mate localization remains a subject of speculation.

Tettigoniidae (Insecta: Orthoptera) collected in tropical forests of Zambia, Cameroon, Gabon and Sao Tome during the entomological expeditions of African Natural History Research Trust

Bruno Massa

Summary: This study is based on a significant sample of Orthoptera collected in four African countries, revealing a total of 109 taxa with annotations and comments. Zambia and Gabon are highlighted as countries unexplored in terms of orthopterological research, with many previously unrecorded species having widespread distribution in tropical Africa. Additionally, new species have been discovered in both Zambia and Gabon, showcasing the rich orthopterofauna diversity in Gabon.
