Designing monovalent selective anion exchange membranes for the simultaneous separation of chloride and fluoride from sulfate in an equimolar ternary mixture

Onder Tekinalp et al.

Summary: This study focuses on designing monovalent selective anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for the simultaneous separation of F- and Cl- from SO2-4 using electrodialysis (ED). The AEMs were optimized by synthesizing brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) polymers and quaternizing them with different tertiary amines. The AEMs were further modified via layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes to enhance their monovalent selectivity. Experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of simultaneously optimizing membrane microstructure and surface for the separation of similar counter-ions in an ED process.

Development of loose nanofiltration PVDF hollow fiber membrane for dye/salt separation

Pengfei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method for fabricating loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes by combining co-extrusion technology and chemical cross-linking. The prepared membranes exhibit small pore size, strong positive charge, high rejection of various dyes, and low salt rejection. They also show excellent stability during long-term filtration and good fouling reduction properties against bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LYZ). This research provides new perspectives for the design of useful LNF HFMs for the treatment of dye/salt wastewater mixtures.

Surface regeneration of templated PVDF membrane for efficient microalgae-rich high saline aquaculture wastewater treatment in membrane distillation

Guang Hui Teoh et al.

Summary: This study focused on using templated PVDF membranes with intermediate flushing to revive fouled membranes during membrane distillation (MD) for sustainable treatment of high saline seawater aquaculture wastewater. Results showed that the superhydrophobic templated membrane with intermediate physical flushing effectively reduced fouling, with a membrane restoring flux performance of up to 97.2% compared to pristine membranes. Long-term tests demonstrated that the superhydrophobic templated membrane maintained excellent separation with a rejection rate of 99.84% for all components and an average water permeation flux of 21.4 kg/m2.h. This study highlights the potential of using superhydrophobic templated membranes with surface reviving capability to overcome membrane fouling challenges in MD, providing a sustainable solution for microalgae-rich and high salinity wastewater treatment.

Permeation selectivity in the electro-dialysis of mono- and divalent cations using supported liquid membranes

Zexin Qian et al.

Summary: The study investigated the permeation selectivity in electro-dialysis of Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ using a supported liquid membrane (SLM). It was found that monovalent cations Na+ and K+ migrate in a dehydrated state, while divalent cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ migrate in a (partly) hydrated state. The overall permeation selectivity was determined by a combination of ion-exchange selectivity and electrophoretic mobility of the cations present in the membrane.

Simultaneous partial Nitrification, ANAMMOX and denitrification (SNAD)-A review of critical operating parameters and reactor configurations

Virender Singh et al.

Summary: Nitrogen removal is a crucial aspect of wastewater treatment. Traditional biological nitrogen removal processes are effective but costly. The integration of ANAMMOX bacteria with shortcut nitrogen removal processes has provided a sustainable solution, although practical limitations remain. The SNAD process, which involves a synergistic relationship among AOB, ANAMMOX, and denitrifiers, offers a promising alternative with high nitrogen removal efficiency. This review examines the recent developments in the SNAD process, including critical process parameters and different reactor configurations, and provides guidance for future engineering applications.
