CFD-guided patterning of tubular ceramic membrane surface by stereolithography: Optimizing morphology at the mesoscale for improved hydrodynamic control of membrane fouling

Cyril Chevarin et al.

Summary: A preliminary study was conducted to optimize the morphological design of tubular single-channel alumina membranes using stereolithography. Computational fluid dynamics calculations were utilized to optimize the ring-patterned inner surface geometry, which was further validated through microfiltration tests. Patterning of the inner surface of tubular membranes helped reduce cake formation at higher average crossflow velocities. The study highlights the advantages of a stereolithography-based approach in the morphological design of ceramic membranes.

The Effect of the Rotating Disk Geometry on the Flow and Flux Enhancement in a Dynamic Filtration System

Jo Eun Park et al.

Summary: A numerical study was conducted to investigate the effect of rotating patterned disks on flow and permeate flux in a dynamic filtration system. The study used five disks with different numbers of patterns and examined the effects of pattern number and disk angular velocity on flow and permeate flux. The study found that the wheel-shaped patterns shifted the central core layer towards the membrane, leading to increased shear stresses and permeate flux compared to a plain disk filtration system. When the number of patterns exceeded eight, significant increases in wall shear stress and permeate flux were observed.

Biomimetic nanofiltration membranes: Critical review of materials, structures, and applications to water purification

Vikrant Sharma et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants from industrialization have caused a decrease in fresh water resources. Nanofiltration membranes offer efficient separation of contaminants and have potential as a future technology for complex water purification due to scalability, minimal environmental impact, and energy recovery. Biomimetic membranes, inspired by biological cell membranes, aim to overcome the tradeoff between permeability and selectivity. This comprehensive review examines recent advancements in biomimetic membrane materials, their characteristics, and applications in wastewater treatment. Challenges such as replicating the exact cell structure, fouling, and material stability are discussed, along with opportunities for further research. The review concludes that reproducible and easily processable biomimetic materials are necessary for commercial applications.

Flow and mixing analysis of a thixotropic fluid in a barrier-emb e dde d partitioned pipe mixer (BPPM): A numerical study

Seon Yeop Jung et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the flow and mixing characteristics of a thixotropic fluid in a static mixer. The results show that the characteristics of the thixotropic fluid are influenced by the flow parameters and the thixotropy parameter. As the flow parameters increase, the mixing characteristics become more complex, and the thixotropy parameter significantly affects the average of the structure parameter. From the analysis of the Poincare section and the flux-weighted intensity of segregation, it is found that the mixing performance improves with the increase of the thixotropy parameter in the counter-rotational static mixer, while a more complex trend of the degree of mixing is observed in the co-rotational mixer.

Concentration polarization on surface patterned membranes

Chuning Shang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of surface pattern on concentration polarization in membranes. The results show interesting trends in concentration polarization degree depending on membrane orientation and solute size. The simulation results confirm the experimental observations and highlight the crucial role of diffusivity in this phenomenon. Compared to smooth membranes, patterned membranes generally exhibit more severe concentration polarization.

Concentration polarization over reverse osmosis membranes with engineered surface features

Zuo Zhou et al.

Summary: Creating membranes with engineered surface features has been proven to be effective in reducing membrane fouling and increasing flux. These surface patterns enhance mixing and improve mass transfer of solutes away from the membrane, leading to improved performance in reverse osmosis membranes operated under laminar flow conditions. The patterns influence velocity, shear stress, and concentration profiles, resulting in varying levels of concentration polarization and impacting mass transfer efficiency. Despite higher concentration polarization, the additional surface area provided by the patterns can lead to an increase in nominal permeate flux, highlighting the potential benefits of using patterned membranes.

Anti-fouling behavior of micro-patterned PVDF membranes prepared via spray-assisted phase inversion: Influence of pattern shapes and flow configuration

Ayesha Ilyas et al.

Summary: Experimental and simulation studies using patterned membranes synthesized via s-NIPS method showed a significant reduction in fouling deposition, increased membrane permeance, delayed cake layer formation, and improved anti-fouling potential. The results suggest promising application of patterned PVDF membranes for filtration due to higher effective surface area, reduced fouling, and increased membrane porosity.
