Influence of high-speed sintering protocols on translucency, mechanical properties, microstructure, crystallography, and low-temperature degradation of highly translucent zirconia

Hengyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of high-speed sintering on the optical and mechanical properties, microstructure, crystallography, and low-temperature degradation of commercial Y-PSZ. The results showed that the sintering programs had minimal impact on translucency and flexural strength. Speed-sintered and conventionally-sintered Y-PSZ exhibited comparable fractographic analysis results and monoclinic volume fractions.

In vivo ageing of zirconia dental ceramics - Part II: Highly-translucent and rapid-sintered 3Y-TZP

Jasna Cotic et al.

Summary: The study assessed the effects of rapid sintering and reduced alumina content on the ageing of 3Y-TZP ceramics in the oral environment. Results showed that materials prepared with rapid sintering aged 1.6 times faster than those with conventional sintering. Discs with polished surfaces exhibited clear signs of ageing after 48 months.

In vivo aging of zirconia dental ceramics - Part I: Biomedical grade 3Y-TZP

Andraz Kocjan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated in vivo aging of biomedical grade 3Y-TZP ceramics in the oral environment and compared it with artificially accelerated in vitro hydrothermal aging at 37 degrees C. The results showed that there were no significant differences in aging between finer and coarser-grained specimens in vivo, but aging rates varied depending on surface treatments, exhibiting different kinetics processes.

Influence of sintering conditions on translucency, biaxial flexural strength, microstructure, and low-temperature degradation of highly translucent dental zirconia

Thaw Di Cho Too et al.

Summary: Limited research has been done on the influence of different sintering temperatures on the properties of highly translucent zirconia ceramics. This study demonstrated that the sintering temperature affects the translucency and ceramic grades, but does not alter their flexural strength. Additionally, the sintering temperature also affects the low-temperature degradation of zirconia ceramics.

Hydrothermal aging affects the three-dimensional fit and fatigue lifetime of zirconia abutments

Edmara T. P. Bergamo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance parameters of two different designed zirconia abutments under aging conditions, showing that hydrothermal aging significantly influenced the 3D fit and survival probability of the abutments under high loads.

The Influence of Surface Preparation, Chewing Simulation, and Thermal Cycling on the Phase Composition of Dental Zirconia

Markus Wertz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of dental technical tools on the phase composition and roughness of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals for prosthetic dentistry applications. It was found that grinding reduced the monoclinic phase fraction, while polishing or grinding transformed it entirely into one of the tetragonal phases. Additionally, mechanical stress did not trigger low-temperature degradation, but may lead to a phase transformation affecting translucency and mechanical properties.

Failure Load and Fatigue Behavior of Monolithic Translucent Zirconia, PICN and Rapid-Layer Posterior Single Crowns on Zirconia Implants

Frank A. Spitznagel et al.

Summary: This laboratory study aimed to evaluate the thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior and failure modes of monolithic and rapid-layer posterior single-crowns supported by zirconia implants. Significant differences in failure loads were detected among groups, all materials exceeded clinically acceptable failure load values higher than 900N, with Z-HT and Z-ST showing the highest reliability towards fatigue. Rapid-layer design of PICN and YZ-HT might be an interesting treatment concept for posterior implant SCs.

Monolithic zirconia crowns: effect of thickness reduction on fatigue behavior and failure load

Lea Sophia Prott et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of thickness reduction and fatigue on the failure load of monolithic zirconia crowns, finding that reduced crown thickness leads to reduced characteristic strength, and fatigue significantly reduces the failure load of 0.5 mm monolithic 3Y-TZP crowns.
