Hillsborough bay inflow modification study: An application of the Tampa Bay Coastal Ocean Model

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: The salinity gradient in Tampa Bay is crucial to its ecosystem functionality. This study assesses the potential impact of removing the outflow from the Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (HFCAWTP) on the salinity and flow fields of Hillsborough Bay using numerical circulation models and Knudsen theorem. The results show that the reduction of treated reclaimed water inflow from HFCAWTP does not significantly affect the circulation or salinity distributions in Hillsborough Bay or Tampa Bay. The estimated increase in salinity after removing the HFCAWTP outflow averaged within Hillsborough Bay is 0.13 psu. Thus, the effects of removing the HFCAWTP outflow are minimal compared to natural variations.

Dynamics of wave generation and dissipation processes during cold wave events in the Bohai Sea

Jie Peng et al.

Summary: Wave dynamics in the semi-enclosed Bohai Sea during cold wave events were investigated using a wind-wave model. The impacts of different wind conditions and model physics settings on simulated waves were examined. It was found that wind waves were the dominant component during cold wave events, and wave dissipation was mainly controlled by whitecapping and bottom friction.

Initial estuarine response to inorganic nutrient inputs from a legacy mining facility adjacent to Tampa Bay, Florida

Marcus W. Beck et al.

Summary: Legacy mining facilities pose significant risks to aquatic resources. The release of phosphate mining wastewater and marine dredge water into lower Tampa Bay resulted in adverse water quality changes, including phytoplankton blooms, filamentous cyanobacteria blooms, and a red tide caused by Karenia brevis. The incident also led to a significant fish kill.

A Wet/Dry Point Treatment Method of FVCOM, Part II: Application to the Okatee/Colleton River in South Carolina

Changsheng Chen et al.

Summary: The wet/dry point treatment method of FVCOM was successfully applied to simulate the tide-induced flooding/drying process in the Okatee/Colleton River Estuary in South Carolina. The simulation results were compared with observed data and showed that FVCOM can accurately reproduce the tidal and residual currents in the area, as well as the flooding process onto the saltmarsh.

Offshore Sea Levels Measured With an Anchored Spar-Buoy System Using GPS Interferometric Reflectometry

Surui Xie et al.

Summary: Traditional coastal tide gauges are affected by land returns, leading to an observational gap near the coast, whereas GPS spar-buoys provide accurate water level measurements in the transition zone between the coast and open ocean. The water level data obtained by GPS spar-buoys can effectively recover the amplitude and phase of tidal constituents, showing good agreement with acoustic tide gauge measurements.
