Summary: The proper separation of chromosomes during mitosis relies on load-bearing connections between sister kinetochores and opposite spindle poles via microtubule bundles. This study challenges the current models of spindle assembly by showing that most amphitelic attachments form synchronously at a specific stage and within a defined domain of the spindle. Structural and computational analyses suggest that interactions between kinetochores and microtubule bundles are mediated by noncentrosomal short microtubules.
