Benign peripheral nerve tumors: Analysis of 89 FNA cases emphasizing diagnostic accuracy and their morphologic spectrum

Paul E. Wakely Jr

Summary: Benign peripheral nerve tumors (BPNTs) are a diverse group of soft tissue tumors that include nerve sheath tumors, granular cell tumor (GCT), and ganglioneuroma. This study investigated the diagnostic accuracy of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy for BPNT and found variable accuracy in diagnosing different types of tumors.

An exceptionally rare case of metastatic osteoclast-like giant cell-rich variant of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: A diagnostic challenge

Tarunpreet Saini et al.

Summary: This paper describes a rare case of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cell-rich variant. The patient presented with enlarged lymph nodes after thyroid surgery, and fine needle aspiration cytology showed multinucleated osteoclastic-like giant cells, which can be mistaken for other lesions.

Cytology of Undifferentiated Round-Cell Sarcomas of Bone and Soft Tissue: Ewing Sarcoma or Not Ewing Sarcoma , That Is the Question

Pawel Gajdzis et al.

Summary: Undifferentiated round-cell sarcomas (URCS) of soft tissue and bone are a clinically heterogeneous group of tumors with different genetic alterations, also known as Ewing-like sarcomas. Understanding the cytomorphologic and immunohistochemical differences among these tumors is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate ancillary studies.

Diagnostic clues for differentiating Merkel cell carcinoma from lymphoma in fine-needle aspiration cytology

Chih-Yi Liu et al.

Summary: Nodal fine needle aspiration is crucial in diagnosing malignancy with unknown primary, and diagnosing metastatic MCC can be challenging without prior skin cancer history. The cytological features such as nuclear molding, Indian filing, and rare cytoplasmic pale bodies can be helpful clues for distinguishing metastatic MCC from other small round cell tumors like lymphoma.

Diagnosing gastrointestinal stromal tumors: The utility of fine-needle aspiration cytology versus biopsy

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compared the advantages and disadvantages of biopsy and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the diagnosis of Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). The results showed that FNA cytology had significantly better sample representability, diagnostic accuracy, and shorter time to diagnosis compared to biopsy. Ancillary techniques could also be performed satisfactorily on FNA materials.

Revisiting cytomorphology, including unusual features and clinical scenarios of 8 cases of alveolar soft part sarcoma with TFE3 immunohistochemical staining in 7 cases

Bharat Rekhi et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of cytomorphological features of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) in 8 cases, with TFE3 immunostaining aiding in diagnosis. Most cases showed hypercellularity with cohesive clusters of round to oval cells containing abundant granular or vacuolated cytoplasm. Immunohistochemical staining for TFE3 was positive in 7 out of 8 tumors, which can aid in differentiating ASPS from its mimics.

Summary: FNA cytology is a suitable tool for assessing the malignant potential of sampled soft tissue/bone lesions, but is less effective than CNB in defining the correct histopathological entity. A standardized reporting system may enhance the clinical management of patients with soft tissue tumors primarily examined by FNA cytology.
