Effect of Chitosan-24-Epibrassinolide Composite Coating on the Quality Attributes of Late-Harvested Pomegranate Fruit under Simulated Commercial Storage Conditions

Sbulelo Mwelase et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of chitosan functionalized with epibrassinolide coating in preserving the postharvest quality of late-harvested pomegranate fruit. The results showed that the CH + 10μM EBR treatment significantly delayed degradation processes, reduced weight loss, respiration, electrolyte leakage and decay, and maintained higher texture and total soluble solids compared to untreated fruit. This was attributed to the higher antioxidant content of the coated fruit.

Effect of chitosan-based melatonin composite coating on the quality of minimally processed pomegranate aril-sacs during cold storage

Sbulelo Mwelase et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of a chitosan-based melatonin composite coating to maintain the quality and delay senescence of minimally processed pomegranate aril-sacs during refrigerated storage. The results showed that the coating treatments significantly delayed weight loss and respiration rate, retained desirable properties such as color, ascorbic acid content, anthocyanin content, and antioxidant capacity, and suppressed surface browning development. The recommended treatment concentration for optimal results was 0.8-1 mM melatonin. The findings of this study have important implications for preserving the quality and extending the storage life of minimally processed pomegranate aril-sacs.
