Lipid Nanomaterials for Targeted Delivery of Dermocosmetic Ingredients: Advances in Photoprotection and Skin Anti-Aging

Eliana B. Souto et al.

Summary: Despite the health benefits of the sun, overexposure without proper precautions can cause irreversible damage to the skin. To balance the risks and benefits, a technological alternative using lipid nanoparticulate systems as photoprotective agents has been found, which offers several advantages compared to chemical and physical sunscreens.

A mini-review on limitations associated with UV filters

Mariam Abou-Dahech et al.

Summary: Ultraviolet light from the sun can cause long-term skin damage and cancer. The use of sunscreen products with UV filters is recommended to prevent sun exposure-related harm. However, there are growing concerns about the safety of sunscreens for humans and the environment. Research has shown that UV filters like oxybenzone can have harmful effects on the hormone systems of aquatic animals and humans. Animal models are currently being used to study the mechanisms and cellular effects of these products. The lack of non-clinical safety assessment data has led to controversy surrounding the reported findings on the potential toxicities of UV filters.

A resveratrol-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier hydrogel to enhance the anti-UV irradiation and anti-oxidant efficacy

Liu Miao et al.

Summary: Preparation of RES-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier gel (RES-NLC-gel) improved RES stability and accumulation in the epidermis. The gel effectively scavenged free radicals, protected skin cells from UV radiation, decreased expression of apoptotic proteins, and increased expression of survival proteins. Pretreatment with RES-NLC-gel reduced erythema, wrinkles, and scabs on mouse skin, decreased epidermal thickness, and increased antioxidant enzyme activities in skin tissue. RES-NLC-gel demonstrated significant anti-UV irradiation and antioxidant activity in vivo, showing great potential in skin protection.
