Current Landscape of Surgical Assessment Models in Urology Residency Training

Telestration with augmented reality improves surgical performance through gaze guidance

Summary: This study analyzed the effect of telestration guided instructions using an augmented reality system on gaze behavior during minimally invasive surgery (MIS) training. The results showed that using telestration improved the trainees' gaze behavior by reducing the time from instruction to fixation on targets and increasing the convergence of gazes between the instructor and the trainee. This led to better surgical performance and could be used to improve training outcomes.

Visuospatial ability is associated to 2D laparoscopic simulator performance amongst surgical residents

Summary: This study investigated the impact of visuo-spatial ability, background factors, and manual dexterity on laparoscopic surgical simulator performance among applicants and 1st year surgical residents. The results showed that visuospatial ability was significantly associated with performance in a 2D video box laparoscopic simulator, but not in a 3D virtual reality simulator. Other background factors were not associated with performance in either simulator. The findings suggest that knowledge of an applicant's visuospatial ability can be utilized to tailor individualized laparoscopic training programs and potentially serve as a selection tool for laparoscopic ability in the future.

The system, fabricated using 3D printing and human CT data, resembles the human upper urinary tract in terms of anatomical shape and vascular patterns. Through endoscopic video analysis, performance skills can be quantitatively evaluated. This surgical simulator offers a unique opportunity for realistic and safe training of endourological procedures, and may establish a quantitative standard for evaluating endoscopic skills.
