Adenosine in Acute Myocardial Infarction-Associated Reperfusion Injury: Does it Still Have a Role?

Corrado De Marco et al.

Summary: Adenosine has the potential benefits in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction by inhibiting the pathophysiological processes leading to reperfusion injury. However, the heterogenous evidence regarding its effects has resulted in limited uptake in clinical practice. Therefore, studying the dose, route, timing, and site of administration of adenosine is crucial for its efficacy.

Role of Adenosine and Purinergic Receptors in Myocardial Infarction: Focus on Different Signal Transduction Pathways

Maria Cristina Procopio et al.

Summary: Myocardial infarction is often caused by atherosclerotic plaque erosion or rupture leading to thrombotic occlusion of a coronary vessel. The inadequate oxygen and nutrient supply in the infarcted area can result in cardiomyocyte necrosis and left ventricular function impairment. The adenosine system, purinergic system, and Wnt/beta-catenin pathway may play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of cardiac damage following MI, with potential therapeutic implications in preventing adverse LV remodeling and heart failure.

Inflammation in Human Heart Failure: Major Mediators and Therapeutic Targets

Marta Reina-Couto et al.

Summary: Inflammation is a major contributor to different types of heart failure, but trials of anti-inflammatory strategies in HF patients have shown inconsistent results. Future therapeutic advances may involve tailored anti-inflammatory treatments based on individual inflammatory profiles and the development of resolution pharmacology targeting inflammation pathways in HF.
