Meisosomes, folded membrane microdomains between the apical extracellular matrix and epidermis

Dina Aggad et al.

Summary: In mutants lacking furrows, the normal connection between the epidermis and the cuticle is lost, and stacked structures are formed in the lateral epidermis. These structures connect the lateral epidermis to the cuticle and play a role in the stress response. Additionally, furrow mutants exhibit significant changes in the biomechanical properties of their skin.

WormBase in 2022-data, processes, and tools for analyzing Caenorhabditis elegans

Paul Davis et al.

Summary: WormBase is a central repository for genetics and genomics research on Caenorhabditis elegans, providing data and tools to facilitate the study of this organism and related nematodes. They continually evolve to incorporate new data types and services, aiming to integrate and utilize knowledge from published nematode genetics literature. Additionally, they collaborate with the Alliance of Genome Resources to harmonize infrastructure, processes, and tools.

C. elegans BLMP-1 controls apical epidermal cell morphology by repressing expression of mannosyltransferase bus-8 and molting signal mlt-8

Yun-Zhe Wu et al.

Summary: The conserved Zn-finger transcription factor BLMP-1/Blimp1 regulates the apical cell shape of epidermis in C. elegans by downregulating aECM remodeling. Loss of blmp-1 leads to upregulation of genes involved in molting, causing abnormal shape in the apical region of adult epidermal cells. This defect can be suppressed by reducing bus-8 or mlt-8 expression.

PEZO-1 and TRP-4 mechanosensors are involved in mating behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans

Katherine I. Brugman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the roles of two mechanotransducer proteins, PEZO-1 and TRP-4, in male mating behavior of Caenorhabditis elegans. The results show that pezo-1 is expressed in male-specific neurons involved in mating, while trp-4 is expressed in the PCA sensory neuron that monitors relative sliding between the male and the hermaphrodite. Mutations in both genes disrupt various steps of mating, and pan-neuronal imaging reveals spurious activation of sensory neurons involved in vulva detection in the mutants. The study demonstrates new roles for PEZO-1 and TRP-4 in C. elegans mating behavior.

Specific collagens maintain the cuticle permeability barrier in Caenorhabditis elegans

Anjali Sandhu et al.

Summary: Collagen-enriched cuticle is the outermost layer of skin in C. elegans, regulated by six permeability determining collagens that maintain barrier function and provide protection against exogenous toxins. These PD collagens regulate cuticle permeability by controlling expression levels to enhance survival and work in parallel with other transcription factors.
