Complementary host behaviour of three anthracenyl-derived roof-shaped compounds in mixed pyridines

Benita Barton et al.

Summary: The host abilities of three compounds, H1, H2, and H3, for pyridine and methylpyridines were investigated. It was found that H1 preferred pyridine, H2 preferred 3MePy, and H3 preferred 2MePy. Furthermore, H1 showed a high selectivity for extracting pyridine from a mixture, demonstrating the potential of host-guest chemistry strategies for separation.

Selectivity considerations of host compound trans-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-dicarboxylic acid when presented with pyridine and picoline mixtures: charge-assisted versus classical hydrogen bonding

Benita Barton et al.

Summary: In this study, the host behavior of a compound H1 in different pyridine compounds was assessed, and it was found that H1 exhibited high selectivity for 2MP and 3MP. The analysis of the solid samples revealed that the complexes formed between H1 and 2MP or 3MP were actually salts, and the host preference for 2MP and 3MP was not only due to guest enclathration but also strong charge-assisted hydrogen bonding. Additionally, the thermal stabilities of the complexes were consistent with the preferences of the guests.

Potential facile separation strategy for mixtures of 3-and 4-methylpyridine by employing N,N′-bis(9-phenyl-9-xanthenyl)ethylenediamine as an alternative host compound

Benita Barton et al.

Summary: In this study, a feasible host candidate was provided for the separation of 3-methylpyridine (3MP) and 4-methylpyridine (4MP) isomers that are difficult to separate by conventional means. Single crystal diffraction and thermal analysis experiments were conducted to investigate the preference of host H2 for 3MP, showing a potential relationship between host-guest interactions and selectivity. Results from the thermal analyses were less informative.

Alternative purification protocols of mixed pyridines in the presence of trans-N,N′-bis(9-phenyl-9-xanthenyl)cyclohexane-1,4-diamine

Benita Barton et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the host compound 1,4-DAX has the ability to purify 2MP/PYR and 3MP/PYR binary mixtures almost exclusively containing PYR. Results show that even with approximately 30% PYR in the mixtures, 1,4-DAX can include up to 92.4% and 96.4% of PYR in the complexes. Additionally, 1,4-DAX is capable of forming mixed complexes with as high as 87.8% PYR from equimolar ternary mixtures containing 2MP, 3MP and PYR.
