Harmonising nomenclature in pharmacopeial texts

Oisin N. Kavanagh

Summary: Nomenclature in scientific literature has always been a topic of debate. Differences in interpretations of technical language between expert groups can hinder efforts to harmonize regulatory approval mechanisms for new medicines. This letter examines three examples of divergence in pharmacopeial texts from the US, EU, and Japan, and suggests the need for a consensus and agreed upon terminology to avoid reintroducing variation in regulatory standards.

Synchronization of Cocrystal Dissolution and Drug Precipitation to Sustain Drug Supersaturation

Tatiane Cogo Machado et al.

Summary: This study presents a graphical analysis of drug and coformer concentrations contributed by dissolving cocrystals in a simplified cocrystal phase diagram. The conceptual basis and analysis identify parameters that control cocrystal dissolution-drug supersaturation-precipitation behavior. The study demonstrates and quantifies the important effects of coformer concentration, cocrystal dose, and cocrystal solubility on drug supersaturation levels through the DSP index. The findings can be used to guide the addition of coformer to cocrystal dissolution media or formulations.

Novel extraction, rapid assessment and bioavailability improvement of quercetin: A review

Muhammad Faisal Manzoor et al.

Summary: The review discusses the use of novel extraction and non-destructive assessment techniques in the extraction and identification of quercetin, highlighting benefits such as shorter extraction time, less organic solvent usage, environmentally friendly processes, non-interruptive assessment, and label-free identification. Quercetin demonstrates potential therapeutic properties, and innovative drug delivery strategies have been proposed to address its low bioavailability.

Cocrystal of Apixaban-Quercetin: Improving Solubility and Bioavailability of Drug Combination of Two Poorly Soluble Drugs

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: Novel cocrystals composed of two antithrombotic drugs with poor solubility were developed in this study to improve their solubility, bioavailability, and stability. Compared to physical mixtures and individual drugs, the cocrystals showed significantly enhanced dissolution behavior and increased bioavailability. The study provides a novel approach to overcome the limitations of drug combinations.

Food flavonols: Nutraceuticals with complex health benefits and functionalities

Davide Barreca et al.

Summary: Flavonols are bioactive compounds with health-promoting properties, including antioxidation, cardioprotection, antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer activities. Incorporating flavonols into the human diet is highly recommended for their impressive health benefits, making them excellent nutraceuticals and ingredients for functional food. The metabolization process of flavonols also produces compounds with significant bioactivities, similar to their precursors.
