Allium vegetables: Traditional uses, phytoconstituents, and beneficial effects in inflammation and cancer

Ashraful Alam et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the traditional uses, phytoconstituents, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity of Allium species. These plants contain a wide range of chemical constituents and show potential for anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. Garlic and onion, in particular, have been extensively studied, suggesting that other Allium species may also possess similar bioactive constituents.

Sulfur compounds: From plants to humans and their role in chronic disease prevention

Caroline R. Hill et al.

Summary: Sulfur is an essential element for plant and human health, and its incorporation into the food chain relies heavily on plant uptake. The dietary requirements for sulfur are based on the synthesis of proteins, enzymes, co-enzymes, vitamins, and hormones. While sulfur-containing amino acids are abundant in animal sources, the variety and quantity of sulfur-containing compounds in plants also have wide-ranging effects on human health. The role of sulfur in redox biochemistry protects against oxidative stress and inflammation, which is consistent with cardiometabolic dysfunction and many chronic metabolic diseases.

Formation of volatile sulfur compounds and S-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide in Brassica oleracea vegetables

Katharina Friedrich et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation and formation of sulfur-containing compounds in Brassica vegetables. The results showed that SMCSO was the main sulfur compound, and it degraded to other compounds upon heating. The SMCSO content was similar in white and red cabbages. Proteome profiling revealed a correlation between the recovery of sulfur compounds and the abundance of two cystine lyase isoforms.

Effects of in vitro metabolism of a broccoli leachate, glucosinolates andS-methylcysteine sulphoxide on the human faecal microbiome

Lee Kellingray et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bacterial-mediated bioconversion of glucosinolates and SMCSO using a broccoli leachate, showing enhanced growth of lactobacilli and increased levels of short-chain fatty acids in microbial communities cultured in the leachate. Escherichia isolates from these communities were found to bioconvert glucosinolates and SMCSO, potentially leading to additional health benefits for the host.

Population improvement and synthetic cultivar production in forage kale (Brassica oleracea L.)

John E. Bradshaw

Summary: The study demonstrates that annual forage kale population improvement involving full-sib and selfed families can result in the production of a synthetic cultivar, showing promising results compared to other successful breeding methods. This new breeding method can be completed within a year, indicating high efficiency in the breeding process.

Nutritional Metabolomics and the Classification of Dietary Biomarker Candidates: A Critical Review

Talha Rafiq et al.

Summary: Recent advances in metabolomics have enabled more objective assessment of food exposures, but the quality of evidence supporting dietary biomarkers as valid measures of food intake needs further evaluation. Studies have identified metabolites associated with specific foods or food groups, but more research is needed to confirm and expand on these findings.
