Dietary supplementation with casein/cyanidin-3-O-glucoside nanoparticles alters the gut microbiota in high-fat fed C57BL/6 mice

Qiyan Lyu et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects of casein/cyanidin-3-O-glucoside nanoparticles (CsC3G) on gut microbiota disorders induced by a high-fat diet. In C57BL/6 mice fed a high-fat diet, Cs-C3G improved fat accumulation and liver oxidative stress. Cs-C3G, as a dietary supplement, restored the abundance and diversity of gut microbiota, decreased the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, increased beneficial microorganisms, and reduced opportunistic pathogenic bacteria. Overall, Cs-C3G regulated the disturbance of gut microbiota, preventing HFD-induced obesity and liver damage.

Shaping the gut microbiota by bioactive phytochemicals: An emerging approach for the prevention and treatment of human diseases

Surya Sudheer et al.

Summary: A healthy gut microbiota is essential for overall health, and dietary plants containing bioactive phytochemicals play a critical role in shaping the gut microbiota. These phytochemicals improve gastrointestinal health, reduce the risk of diseases, and modulate cellular and molecular processes mediated by the gut microbiota. Regular consumption of bioactive phytochemical-rich foods promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibits the development of harmful bacteria, while the gut microbiota transforms these phytochemicals, enhancing their bioactivity and reducing toxicity.

Maximizing the Estrogenic Potential of Soy Isoflavones through the Gut Microbiome: Implication for Cardiometabolic Health in Postmenopausal Women

Lindsay M. Leonard et al.

Summary: Soy isoflavones, particularly (S)-equol, have been proposed as an alternative treatment for managing postmenopausal symptoms and improving long-term health. However, the lack of equol-producing bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of over half of the human population complicates the interpretation of data collected from humans. Rodent models, which efficiently produce equol, also pose challenges in translating findings to humans. The development of model systems to manipulate equol production and control confounding factors is needed to determine the therapeutic approaches for maximizing equol production and improving the health of postmenopausal women consuming soy.

Recent advances in dietary flavonoids for management of type 2 diabetes

Jianbo Xiao

Summary: This review article summarizes the advances in the use of dietary flavonoids for managing type 2 diabetes. While the hypoglycemic effects of flavonoids have been widely reported in animal studies, their therapeutic effects on diabetes in clinical trials are limited. However, many flavonoid compounds can ameliorate diabetes complications through their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities. The clinical data on the anti-diabetic effects of flavonoids are still limited, and the relationship between the structure of flavonoids and their anti-diabetic activity is not well understood. Foods rich in flavonoids can prevent and manage type 2 diabetes, and combining them with other components can enhance their anti-diabetic potential.
