Ensuring planetary survival: the centrality of organic carbon in balancing the multifunctional nature of soils

Peter M. Kopittke et al.

Summary: Healthy soils play a crucial role in planetary survivability, providing not only calories but also other essential functions. However, intensive agriculture is rapidly degrading soils and diminishing their capacity to deliver vital functions, highlighting the need to focus on the multiple functions of soils for long-term human welfare and the survivability of the planet.

A new theory for soil health

James A. Harris et al.

Summary: The term "soil health" has attracted the interest of government and land managers, but there is a lack of consensus in the academic community about its use and benefits. While it has proven effective in conveying best practice to non-experts, there is a growing demand for tools that can measure soil health quantitatively. However, the challenge lies in that soil health is not easily quantifiable or measurable, as health is a characteristic of living systems, not inanimate objects.

Monitoring changes in global soil organic carbon stocks from space

J. Padarian et al.

Summary: Soils globally are facing threats, with declining soil productivity and health. Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a crucial role in ensuring food, soil, water, and energy security, as well as biodiversity protection. A semi-mechanistic model based on a worldwide soil database is introduced to monitor SOC stocks at a global scale. The study found that from 2001 to 2020, landcover change led to annual losses of 1.9 Pg SOC, with the tropic and sub-tropic regions experiencing the largest losses.

The role of soil in defining planetary boundaries and the safe operating space for humanity

Peter M. Kopittke et al.

Summary: Soils play a critical role in providing food, but excessive pressure on soils can lead to negative consequences such as climate change and ocean acidification. Urgent intervention is needed to improve soil management and minimize the harmful impact on the Earth, highlighting the importance of understanding and acting upon the role of soils in ensuring planetary boundaries are respected.

Summary: The newly proposed Soil Health Index (SHI) can rapidly assess the impact of soil productivity on soil health. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) can identify soil productivity in different cropping systems, with orchard soil showing relatively higher health due to natural soil productivity.

Soil multifunctionality: Synergies and trade-offs acrossEuropeanclimatic zones and land uses

Marie J. Zwetsloot et al.

Summary: Societal demands for food security and environmental sustainability have prompted the study of synergies and trade-offs between soil functions across Europe. The research found that managing and monitoring soil multifunctionality is feasible, but there are constraints and trade-offs between soil functions. Nutrient cycling, biodiversity, and climate regulation are less frequently delivered at high capacity compared to primary productivity and water regulation. Synergies and trade-offs between soil functions vary by climatic zone and land-use type.
