Enhancement of astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis by exogenous oxaloacetate combined with nitrogen deficiency

Wenjie Yu et al.

Summary: This study developed a strategy by combining exogenous addition of oxaloacetate with nitrogen deficiency to enhance astaxanthin production in Haematococcus pluvialis. The addition of oxaloacetate promoted respiration over photosynthesis and increased metabolite levels in various pathways, leading to elevated levels of substrates and enhanced astaxanthin synthesis in the cells. These findings provide a new and effective approach for optimizing astaxanthin production.

Gannoru Kankanamalage Sanuji Hasara Nishshanka et al.

Summary: Cultivating microalgae using wastewater reduces water consumption and provides nutrients, with the potential for developing high-value product first biorefineries. Haematococcus pluvialis and Chromochloris zofingiensis cultivated in synthetic dairy wastewater achieved biomass concentrations of 0.55 g/L and 0.65 g/L, with astaxanthin contents of 2.1% and 0.4% respectively. The study also showed good wastewater treatment and phycoremediation capabilities, with residual biomass suitable for biorefining.

Improvement of a Specific Culture Medium Based on Industrial Glucose for Carotenoid Production by Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous

Alejandro Torres-Haro et al.

Summary: A low-cost chemically defined (CD) culture medium was proposed for growth and carotenoid production by Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous, showing enhanced production levels when compared to traditional media. The addition of industrial glucose, vitamins, glutamate, and Na2HPO4 significantly increased carotenoid biosynthesis, leading to improved production levels. The CD-specific culture medium proved to be an efficient alternative for carotenoid production at laboratory and pilot levels, with potential for industrial scaling.

ΔFBA-Predicting metabolic flux alterations using genome-scale metabolic models and differential transcriptomic data

Sudharshan A. Ravi et al.

Summary: Genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) provide a comprehensive representation of biochemical reactions in a cell, but predicting metabolic flux alterations using GEMs is sensitive to the assumed metabolic objective. The proposed Delta FBA method integrates differential gene expression data to evaluate metabolic flux differences between conditions directly without specifying a metabolic objective, outperforming existing methods in accuracy.

Enhancement of astaxanthin accumulation using black light in Coelastrum and Monoraphidium isolated from Malaysia

Marshila Kaha et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of black light as a stressor on the accumulation of astaxanthin in two tropical green algal strains. The study found that both Coelastrum sp. and Monoraphidium sp. SP03 showed significantly higher levels of astaxanthin accumulation under black light conditions, with Coelastrum sp. exhibiting higher scavenging activity. The results suggest that black light has the potential to enhance the production of astaxanthin in microalgae.
