The Origin of the Paleo-Kuril Arc, NE Japan: Sediment Provenance Change and Its Implications for Plate Configuration in the NW Pacific Region Since the Late Cretaceous

H. Harisma et al.

Summary: By analyzing detrital zircon U-Pb ages, this study reveals the development of Paleo-Kuril Arc as a continental arc during the Late Cretaceous, rather than an intraoceanic arc.

The mantle structure below petit-spot volcanoes

Naoto Hirano et al.

Summary: Petit-spot volcanoes provide a unique opportunity to study the structure and chemical composition of the lithospheric and asthenospheric mantle beneath the subducting oceanic crust. These volcanoes have been found off the Japan, Java, Chile and Mariana trenches, and their existence along outer rise of plates cannot be ruled out. Investigation of the lavas and xenolithic material erupted from petit-spot volcanoes suggests that the suboceanic lithosphere undergoes metasomatism by ascending petit-spot melts. The ultimate source and geodynamic processes of petit-spot melts remain ambiguous.

Tokoro Belt (NE Hokkaido): an exhumed, Jurassic - Early Cretaceous seamount in the Late Cretaceous accretionary prism of northern Japan

Shunta Sakai et al.

Summary: The Tokoro Belt in NE Hokkaido is part of a Late Cretaceous accretionary complex that is distinct from others around the Pacific Rim due to the abundant presence of basalts and volcaniclastic rocks. The Nikoro Group, characterized by widespread occurrence of volcanic rocks, is divided into western, eastern and southern sections based on internal structure, geochemical affinities and metamorphic grades. The OIB-type volcanic rocks dominate in the western and southern sections, while MORB- and OIA-type rocks are found in the eastern section.

Determination of halogens in geological reference materials using neutron irradiation noble gas mass spectrometry

Masahiro Kobayashi et al.

Summary: Using NI-NGMS, the heavy halogen concentrations of fourteen powdered geological reference materials and seven original blocks of GSJ geological reference materials were determined. The concentrations were found to be systematically lower than their reference values for low-concentration samples, potentially due to contamination during sample preparation. Removing contaminated components before analysis does not affect other analytical methods, but caution should be taken in selecting standard materials for NI-NGMS analysis.

Primitive high-K intraoceanic arc magmas of Eastern Kamchatka: Implications for Paleo-Pacific tectonics and magmatism in the Cretaceous

Anton V. Kutyrev et al.

Summary: The Cretaceous paleo-Pacific system was characterized by significant tectonic and magmatic events, including the formation of spreading centers, microplates, and intra-oceanic arcs. The remnants of these arcs preserved in the Kamchatka Peninsula provide insights into the magmatic sources and tectonic evolution of intra-oceanic arcs during this period. Isotopic compositions suggest that the primitive arc magmatism originates from peridotite modified by subduction-related melts and fluids, without significant contributions from continental or oceanic sediments.

The emplacement of in situ greenstones in the northern Hidaka belt: The tectonic relationship between subduction of the Izanagi-Pacific ridge and Hidaka magmatic activity

Futoshi Nanayama et al.

Summary: Research shows that the emplacement of greenstone bodies in the northern Hidaka belt of northern Hokkaido occurred during the early Eocene, likely due to the subduction of the Izanagi-Pacific Ridge, while the deposition of sedimentary complexes in the same area started around 73-71 Ma, in connection with the evolution of the paleo-Kuril arc and NE Asia continental margin.
