Tightening the requirements for species diagnoses would help integrate DNA-based descriptions in taxonomic practice

Frank E. Rheindt et al.

Summary: The advancements in DNA sequencing technology have made it possible to describe new organisms with increasing precision, but the current bionomenclature codes have poorly defined requirements for species diagnoses, which is a problem for DNA-based taxonomy. The commissioners of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature suggest tightening the definition of species diagnosis in future editions of the codes, in order to improve taxonomic standards and ensure that all diagnoses, including DNA-based ones, provide adequate taxonomic context.

Eocene giant ants, Arctic intercontinental dispersal, and hyperthermals revisited: discovery of fossil Titanomyrma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Formiciinae) in the cool uplands of British Columbia, Canada

S. Bruce Archibald et al.

Summary: The study examines the distribution of the extinct ant genus Titanomyrma and its implications for intercontinental dispersal. The first fossil of this genus was discovered in Eocene Canada, providing insights into the formation of modern Holarctic distributions.

Results of the U/Pb Dating of Detrital Zircons from Upper Cretaceous Deposits in the Novaya Sibir Island (New Siberian Islands, Anjou Island Group)

V. V. Kostyleva et al.

Summary: U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS) dating of detrital zircons from the Upper Cretaceous Derevyannye Gory Formation in Novaya Sibir Island revealed a wide range of ages from Archean to Upper Cretaceous in tuffites and tuffaceous sandstones. The youngest zircon population has a weighted average age of 88 +/- 1.0 Ma, indicating that the sedimentation of the Derevyannye Gory Formation started during the Coniacian. Clastic material was transported from the southwest and south to the north and northeast. The main sources of the sedimentary basin were identified as terrigenous sequences, lithotectonic complexes, and volcanic rocks from different regions.

Canadaphis mordvilkoi, Kononova 1976 (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Canadaphididae)-redescription and neotype designation

Bartosz Oglaza et al.

Summary: This study redescribed a species of aphid, Canadaphis mordvilkoi Kononova, 1976, based on a well-preserved specimen found in the same locality as the holotype. The analysis revealed affinities with other species in the Canadaphididae family. Due to the destruction of the holotype, the specimen was designated as a neotype. Additionally, this study provided the first photos of the type genus of this family.

Synopsis of the fossil Pristocerinae (Hymenoptera, Bethylidae), with description of two new genera and six species from Burmese, Taimyr, Baltic and Rovno ambers

Wesley D. Colombo et al.

Summary: The article provides a synopsis of fossil flat wasps, including those with strong sexual dimorphism, as well as descriptions and illustrations of new genera and species. It also comments on earlier described species and includes the transfer of a species to a new genus. The study also highlights the first record of the Cleistepyris genus in the Old World and provides a key for fossil flat wasps.

Dasycerine rove beetles: Cretaceous diversification, phylogeny and historical biogeography (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Dasycerinae)

Zi-Wei Yin et al.

Summary: Within the Staphylinidae beetle family, Dasycerinae is a small and cryptic subfamily characterized by limited knowledge on its early diversification, evolutionary history, and biogeography. By studying a diverse dasycerine fauna from mid-Cretaceous northern Myanmar, researchers were able to gain insights into the subfamily's characteristics and evolution.

First fossil trichophyine rove beetle from mid-Cretaceous amber of northern Myanmar (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Trichophyinae)

Shuhei Yamamoto et al.

Summary: Trichophyinae is a small subfamily of Staphylinidae, with only one genus, Trichophya Mannerheim, and 18 species. The first fossil representative of Trichophyinae, Trichophya minor sp. nov., was found in mid-Cretaceous amber from northern Myanmar, showing a potential Gondwanan distribution at that time. The study also discusses a trend of miniaturization in Burmese amber beetles.

Wanted, tracked down and identified: Mesozoic non-biting midges of the subfamily Chironominae (Chironomidae, Diptera)

Wojciech Gilka et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence for the presence of non-biting midges of the subfamily Chironominae in the Mesozoic, based on descriptions of rare amber inclusions. A previously reported record from Late Cretaceous Taimyr amber has been revised and confirmed, with a new find in Burmese amber extending the temporal boundary of the subfamily. The discovery of two new genera in amber specimens sheds light on the phylogeny and diversification tempo of the Chironominae and Pseudochironomini in the past.
