Postcranial description of Wendiceratops pinhornensis and a taphonomic analysis of the oldest monodominant ceratopsid bonebed

Sebastian H. W. Scott et al.

Summary: A study has revealed a bonebed in Alberta, Canada, containing well-preserved adult and juvenile skeletal remains of the early centrosaurine ceratopsid, Wendiceratops pinhornensis. This finding allows for the first description of postcranial elements of this basal centrosaurine. The bonebed represents evidence of herding behavior in ceratopsids and is the oldest documented example of such behavior in this group.

Developmental strategies underlying gigantism and miniaturization in non-avialan theropod dinosaurs

Michael D. D'Emic et al.

Summary: In amniotes, adjustments to the rate of growth rather than its duration are considered as the primary developmental strategy underlying body size evolution. However, most previous studies lack a phylogenetic framework and focus on pairwise comparisons. Here, we present a large-scale phylogenetic comparative analysis of non-avialan theropod dinosaurs, revealing that changes in both growth rate and duration played significant roles in the evolution of body size disparity in these dinosaurs and potentially in amniotes as a whole.

Bone histology on Koreaceratops hwaseongensis (Dinosauria: Ceratopsia) from the Lower Cretaceous of South Korea

Sung Jun Baag et al.

Summary: Koreaceratops hwaseongensis is a basal ceratopsian dinosaur found in the Lower Cretaceous Formation in South Korea. The histological features of its bones suggest a semi-arid and seasonal wet-dry climate. Its growth pattern is similar to that of a subadult Protoceratops.

Summary: This study examines the taxonomic identity of the horned dinosaur genus Torosaurus. Based on the analysis of frill material from Canada, it is determined that Torosaurus is a valid genus and not a mature growth form of Triceratops.

Stable isotope record of Triceratops from a mass accumulation (Lance Formation, Wyoming, USA) provides insights into Triceratops behaviour and ecology

Summary: Our understanding of Late Cretaceous dinosaur ecosystems has improved through stable isotope analyses. An analysis of a Triceratops bonebed provides insights into the paleoecology of these large herbivores and their habitat use, diet, and possible migration.

Rapid growth preceded gigantism in sauropodomorph evolution

Jennifer Botha et al.

Summary: Sauropod dinosaurs, the largest land animals, evolved rapid and uninterrupted growth from smaller non-sauropodan sauropodomorphs. The ability for rapid bone tissue formation was a prerequisite for giant body sizes, rather than specifically evolving for that purpose.

Femoral histology and growth patterns of the ceratopsian dinosaur Psittacosaurus sibiricus from the Early Cretaceous of Western Siberia

Pavel P. Skutschas et al.

Summary: Psittacosaurus sibiricus, an early ceratopsian dinosaur from Western Siberia, shows significant histological maturation in long-bone development. The ontogenetic changes in longbone histology of this species are similar to those of the relatively advanced species P. lujiatunensis from China, suggesting an evolutionary trend of earlier achievement of histological maturity in the genus Psittacosaurus. The basal P. mongoliensis from Mongolia exhibits less mature long-bone histology during late ontogeny.
