Processing speed predicts SuperAging years later

Zuzana Ticha et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify possible predictors of SuperAgers (SA). By conducting tests on 96 community-dwelling older persons aged 80-101 years, it was found that processing speed, sex, and age in 2012 could serve as predictors of SA in 2018.

Longitudinal changes in behaviour, mood and functional capacity in the primary progressive aphasia variants

David Foxe et al.

Summary: This study found distinct profiles in behavior, mood, and functional capacity among different variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), which go beyond the primary language disorder. Caregivers of semantic variant PPA reported greater behavioral disturbances than other variants, with memory problems also more severe in semantic and logopenic variants compared to non-fluent variant. These findings have important implications for clinical management and caregiver education in PPA.

Association of Age and Structural Brain Changes With Functional Connectivity and Executive Function in a Middle-Aged to Older Population-Based Cohort

Maximilian Schulz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between age, cortical thickness, white matter damage, and functional brain connectivity in healthy middle-aged to older adults. The findings suggest that higher age is associated with decreased functional connectivity, which may be mediated by cortical thickness for specific subnetworks.

Understanding the multidimensional cognitive deficits of logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia

Siddharth Ramanan et al.

Summary: In this article, a new clinico-anatomical model is proposed to explore the role of left temporoparietal degeneration in non-linguistic cognitive deficits in logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia. By considering research on non-linguistic dysfunction, the authors suggest that the degeneration of temporal/inferior parietal cortices and connected regions can explain a significant portion of multidimensional cognitive features.

Executive functions in primary progressive aphasia: A meta-analysis

Silke Coemans et al.

Summary: This study conducted a multi-level meta-analysis to investigate deficits in executive functions (EFs) in Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) patients. The results showed that PPA patients had poorer EFs compared to age-matched cognitively healthy controls. There were no significant differences between the effect sizes of different EFs components, indicating similar impairments across all components. PPA variant and disease duration were found to be significant moderators of performance.

Assessing executive functions in post-stroke aphasia-utility of verbally based tests

Rahel Schumacher et al.

Summary: It is increasingly acknowledged that patients with post-stroke aphasia not only have language impairments, but also deficits in other cognitive domains. This study aimed to explore the performance of patients with aphasia in verbal executive tests, and its relationship with language tests and nonverbal cognitive functions. The study found that the performance in verbal executive tests was related not only to the severity of language impairment, but also to independent behavioral principal components. Additionally, different components were associated with separate neural correlates.

Summary: This study investigates the diagnostic utility of visuospatial profiles in primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and examines their neural basis. It finds that different PPA variants have distinct visuospatial cognitive profiles that correspond with changes in grey matter volume.

Summary: The study demonstrated the accuracy and validity of the Brain Health Assessment tool in detecting cognitive impairment in a Cuban population, showing excellent performance characteristics in diagnosing cognitive impairments including dementia and MCI. The BHA outperformed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment in all diagnostic groups, supporting the potential application of digital cognitive assessment tools for older adults in LMICs.

Detecting Alzheimer's disease biomarkers with a brief tablet-based cognitive battery: sensitivity to Aβ and tau PET

Elena Tsoy et al.

Summary: Beta-amyloid (A beta) and tau positron emission tomography (PET) can detect the pathological changes of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cognitive measures based on the Brain Health Assessment (BHA) tablet are significantly associated with A beta positivity and regional tau-PET signal. The BHA measures could potentially be used for identifying patients with suspected AD pathology in clinical practice.

Verbal Short-Term Memory Disturbance in the Primary Progressive Aphasias: Challenges and Distinctions in a Clinical Setting

David Foxe et al.

Summary: Impaired verbal 'phonological' short-term memory is a key feature of logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia. Distinguishing between different PPA variants can be challenging due to overlapping language profiles, and a combination of verbal short-term and working memory measures is crucial for understanding language disturbances in PPA. Additionally, visuospatial span tasks are essential for assessing PPA without language contamination.
