Insights into the stress corrosion cracking resistance of a selective laser melted 304L stainless steel in high-temperature hydrogenated water

Shihao Zhang et al.

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) has great potential in manufacturing complex components for nuclear reactors. In this study, the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of SLMed 304L stainless steel (SS) in high-temperature hydrogenated water was evaluated and compared with two wrought 304 SSs. The SLMed 304L SS showed lower SCC susceptibility due to its optimized composition, improved intergranular oxidation resistance, and hindrance of dislocation motion and planar slip.

The intergranular oxidation behavior of low-angle grain boundary of alloy 600 in simulated pressurized water reactor primary water

Xingyu Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the preferential intergranular oxidation (PIO) behavior of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in alloy 600 exposed to simulated pressurized water reactor primary water. The results showed that all LAGBs were susceptible to PIO. Below a misorientation angle of 8.8 degrees, diffusion-induced grain boundary migration (DIGM) did not occur, resulting in slightly varied PIO depths among LAGBs. However, as the misorientation angle increased above 8.8 degrees, chromium (Cr) began to diffuse outward and DIGM took place, leading to a positive correlation between PIO and DIGM depths. Additionally, the PIO depth was not related to the misorientation angle, but instead exhibited an inverse relationship with the atom packing density of grain boundary planes.

A high-resolution characterization of irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking of proton-irradiated 316L stainless steel in simulated pressurized water reactor primary water

Wenjun Kuang et al.

Summary: Analysis of irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracks (IASCCs) in proton-irradiated 316 L stainless steel after constant load test in simulated PWR primary water showed consistent damage with neutron irradiations at similar dose. The microstructural and microchemical features of IASCC cracks were similar to neutron-irradiated samples, indicating the effectiveness of protons in emulating neutron for IASCC study. The preferential oxidation of Si at grain boundaries beyond the crack tip and its dissolution into solution leading to enhanced porosity within the intergranular oxide were identified as important factors behind IASCC in reducing environment.

Insights into the superior stress corrosion cracking resistance of FeCrAl alloy in high temperature hydrogenated water: The critical role of grain boundary oxidation

Jiayu Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the initiation behavior of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of FeCrAl alloy in high temperature hydrogenated water through constant extension rate tensile (CERT) test. Compared to 304 stainless steel (SS), FeCrAl alloy shows greater resistance to SCC initiation, which is attributed to its different oxidation behavior.

Precipitation formation on Σ5 and Σ7 grain boundaries in 316L stainless steel and their roles on intergranular corrosion

Shao-Pu Tsai et al.

Summary: In sensitized AISI 316L stainless steel samples attacked by an HF solution, it was found that Sigma 7 grain boundaries always show corrosion while Sigma 5 grain boundaries never do. The distinct corrosion behavior is related to the different precipitation behavior and surface features exhibited by the two types of grain boundaries.

A novel approach to index site-specific grain boundary plane

Xingyu Feng et al.

Summary: A novel approach using FIB and EBSD or TKD has been developed to characterize all five parameters of individual grain boundaries, providing a convenient and efficient solution for measuring grain orientations and boundary trace angles. The accuracy of the method is better than 3° and it offers an alternative when EBSD measurement is not feasible on degraded sample surfaces.
