High temperature corrosion mechanism of Ni-5W-6B-28Cr-13Al alloy in simulated MSW incineration environment

Wenchao Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the corrosion behavior of a newly designed alloy (Ni-5W-6B-28Cr-13Al) in a simulated municipal solid waste incineration atmosphere containing HCl, NaCl, and SO2. The results showed that the corrosion rate was highest when NaCl and HCl were present together. The corrosion of the alloy was enhanced by the presence of NaCl and formed unprotective oxide scales, but the synergistic effect of NaCl and HCl was suppressed by sulfation after SO2 application.

Chlorine-induced high-temperature corrosion characteristics of Ni-Cr alloy cladding layer and Ni-Cr-Mo alloy cladding layer

Xinyu Wang et al.

Summary: The corrosion properties of four nickel-based cladding layers under chlorine-induced high-temperature corrosion were evaluated using the thickness loss rate. The results show that increasing the Cr content alone does not improve corrosion resistance, but instead worsens internal corrosion. The effect of Mo on enhancing corrosion resistance in laser cladding technology is closely related to its content and distribution. Transverse penetration cracks tend to occur in NiO surrounded by NiCr2O4, while the presence of short rod-like NbO2 enhances the mechanical properties of the NiO layer and eliminates such cracks.

Zhihao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, 316L stainless steel repaired layers were fabricated on a 27SiMn steel substrate using weld surfacing and laser cladding techniques. The microstructures of the repaired layers were characterized, and their surface properties were measured and correlated with the microstructure features. The laser-cladding repaired layer exhibited superior corrosion and wear resistance, which can be attributed to the laser-induced ultrafast cooling and the formation of denser and finer grain structures.

Hot corrosion and electrochemical behavior of NiCrAlY, NiCoCrAlY and NiCoCrAlYTa coatings in molten NaCl-Na2SO4 at 800°C

Jiahao Wang et al.

Summary: The NiCrAlY, NiCoCrAlY, and NiCoCrAlYTa coatings were prepared on a Ni16Cr13Co4Mo alloy using the D-gun spray technique. The hot corrosion behaviors of the coatings were studied at 800 degrees C in molten NaCl-Na2SO4, revealing different corrosion rates and mechanisms for each coating. The presence of Co in the NiCoCrAlY coating reduced carrier density and improved corrosion resistance, while Ta ions in the NiCoCrAlYTa coating increased carrier density of the corrosion layer. The NiCrAlY coating exhibited the most severe hot corrosion due to the formation of (Cr, Al) sulfides promoting black bumps on the surface.

Effect of temperature on hot corrosion of nickel-based alloys for 700? A-USC power plants

Peiyuan Pan et al.

Summary: Nickel-based alloys were exposed to a synthetic flue gas at temperatures ranging from 700 °C to 800 °C. Two main damage mechanisms were identified: general surface oxidation caused by eutectic melting of sulfates, and internal cracking caused by sulfur diffusion. The damage level of the alloys did not increase monotonically with temperature. Significant weight losses due to molten sulfate corrosion were observed at 700-760 °C, while the least amount of damage occurred at 780 °C. Nimonic 263, with the highest cobalt and titanium contents and the lowest aluminum content, exhibited the best resistance to both molten sulfate corrosion and sulfur invasion.

Diffusion of multi-principal elements through stable Cr2O3 and Al2O3 scales

Indranil Roy et al.

Summary: Understanding the oxidation mechanisms in multi-principal elements and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is crucial for their potential applications in high-temperature oxidative environments. This study investigates the diffusion of cations and anions through stable chromium and aluminum oxides in a model HEA using atomistic simulations. The results reveal that tracer cations diffuse faster than native cations at high temperatures and the diffusion dynamics are determined by the migration energies of the diffusion pathways. The presence of tracer/impurity elements in alumina forming alloys significantly affects the growth of the oxide scales.

Grain size dependant high-temperature hot corrosion (HTHC) degradation behavior in Alloy 617 during exposure in Na2SO4 + NaCl + V2O5 salt mixture

P. Bhuyan et al.

Summary: The present investigation explores the effect of grain size on high-temperature hot corrosion response in Alloy 617. It is found that a protective Cr-rich scale forms on the very fine-grained microstructure, hindering the penetration of corrosive species. In contrast, a porous and non-uniform oxide scale develops on the very coarse-grained specimen, resulting in a higher percolation depth. The as-received specimen exhibits the maximum percolation depth due to the presence of both fine and coarse grains, leading to the failure of resistive mechanisms.

Summary: The corrosion of Ni and Ni-20Cr in molten ZnCl2 at 593 K under argon atmosphere was investigated using cyclic polarization and electron microscopy techniques. It was found that the corrosion rates for Ni-20Cr were significantly higher than for pure Ni, attributed to selective anodic dissolution of Cr. Effect of sulfide on corrosion behavior of stainless steel 316SS and Hastelloy C276 in sub/supercritical water

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that 316SS has better corrosion resistance than C276 in both subcritical and supercritical water conditions. In subcritical water at 350°C, the corrosion film of 316SS peeled off while numerous pores or cracks appeared on the surface of C276. In supercritical water at 520°C, a compact scale formed on 316SS sample surface while a duplex-layer scale formed on C276, with Ni-sulfide channels accelerating the sulfidation corrosion of the alloy. High-temperature alloys with high Cr content and low Ni/Cr ratio are considered suitable for equipment in supercritical water gasification of sulfur-containing coal.
