Thermodynamic and environmental analysis for multi-component supercritical thermal fluid generation by supercritical water gasification of oilfield wastewater

Zhiyong Peng et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel process modeling for the Multi-component supercritical thermal fluid (MCSCTF) generation system was developed based on the supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of oilfield wastewater, and the environmental impact of the system was evaluated using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The use of segmented air supply and rational heat exchangers distribution improved the exergy efficiency and reduced the Global Warming Potential (GWP). The sensitivity analysis showed that optimizing system parameters can further improve the exergy efficiency and reduce the GWP.

Hydrogen production from oilfield wastewater by gasification in supercritical water with a continuous system

Zhiyong Peng et al.

Summary: The performance of oilfield wastewater supercritical water gasification (SCWG) was investigated in this study. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the feasibility of total gasification of oilfield wastewater in supercritical water (SCW) due to the inhibition of coke generation. The addition of Na2CO3 or K2CO3 facilitated steam reforming and water-gas shift reactions, leading to high H2 yields and carbon gasification efficiency (CE). This work can serve as the basis for the subsequent generation of multi-component supercritical thermal fluid (MCSCTF) using coupled hydrogen oxidation technology.

Reaction pathways and kinetics for hydrogen production by oilfield wastewater gasification in supercritical water

Zhiyong Peng et al.

Summary: Supercritical multi-component thermal fluid (SMTF) generation technology shows great promise for offshore heavy oil recovery. The first step involves hydrogen production through supercritical water gasification (SCWG), while oilfield wastewater can be used as a toxic waste for SMTF generation. The study conducted experiments to analyze the effects of Na2CO3 catalyst, temperature, and residence time on gas yield and carbon gasification efficiency (CE). The results showed that Na2CO3 catalysis improved gas yield and CE, with higher temperatures and longer residence times being beneficial. The research provides insights into the mechanism of SMTF generation technology.

Corrosion behavior and mechanism of Ni-based alloys Hastelloy C2000 and Inconel 740 in chloride-containing supercritical water oxidation

Shuwei Guo et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior and mechanism of Hastelloy C2000 and Inconel 740 in supercritical water with and without NaCl and oxygen were investigated. The results demonstrated that the synergistic effect of chlorine and oxygen resulted in pits on oxides and promoted the formation of Fe2O3. Chloride ions penetrated the substrate inside by passing through the outer oxide layer. Iron oxides were detected in the outer oxide layer of Hastelloy C2000 and the transition layer of Inconel 740, while Cr2O3 formed in the inner layer of Hastelloy C2000 and the inner and transition layers of Inconel 740. A detailed corrosion mechanism based on the point defect model and the attack effect of chloride ion was proposed for alloys exposed to supercritical water containing oxygen and chloride.

Summary: This paper aims to establish a reaction kinetic model for supercritical water gasification (SCWG) and provide better guidance for optimal industrial reactor design. The model is validated by experimental data and predicts the indicators of carbon gasification efficiency and gas yield versus residence time.

Corrosion characteristics and mechanisms of typical Ni-based corrosion-resistant alloys in sub- and supercritical water

Shuwei Guo et al.

Summary: The corrosion characteristics and mechanisms of Ni-Fe-Cr and Ni-Fe-Cr-Mo-Cu corrosion-resistant alloys in supercritical water were discussed. Inconel 625 and Hastelloy C-276 showed good corrosion resistance in various testing environments. The outer oxide layer formation and potential causes of its looseness and discontinuity were also addressed. This information can guide material selection, design, and optimization of key equipment in supercritical water technologies.
