Mechanism of chlorine-induced stress corrosion cracking of two 304 SS heats in simulated marine environment through in situ X-ray tomography and diffraction: Role of deformation induced martensite and crack branching

Ryan Schoell et al.

Summary: This study conducted in-situ experiments and subsequent electron microscopy characterization to reveal the insignificant role of deformation-induced martensite in chlorine-induced stress-corrosion cracking (CISCC), the influence of stress intensity on crack branching types, and the presence of dissolution mechanism.

Physical and chemical properties of sea salt deliquescent brines as a function of temperature and relative humidity

C. R. Bryan et al.

Summary: Thermodynamic modeling is used to predict the chemical compositions of brines formed by sea salt aerosol deliquescence. The properties of mixed brines are measured at different temperatures, and their effects on the atmospheric corrosion of austenitic stainless steel are discussed using spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters as an example. Understanding the evolving brine chemistries and properties is crucial for predicting the timing, rate, and long-term impacts of canister corrosion.

Effect of Salt Composition and Microstructure on Stress Corrosion Cracking of 316L Austenitic Stainless Steel for Dry Storage Canisters

P. Dong et al.

Summary: The study found that higher SCC/pitting densities were observed in the HAZ region exposed to MgCl2 due to higher tensile residual stresses and plastic strains. The salt composition had a significant impact on SCC, pitting density, and surface corrosion behavior.

Corrosion-induced microstructure degradation of copper in sulfide-containing simulated anoxic groundwater studied by synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction and ab-initio density functional theory calculation

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: Through synchrotron high-energy XRD measurements and ab-initio DFT calculations, it was found that sulfur promotes hydrogen adsorption on copper. Water-induced surface reconstruction and hydrogen insertion into the microstructure lead to lattice expansion and weakening of metal bonds, ultimately causing lattice degradation and a risk of hydrogen-induced cracking in the presence of sulfur.

Effect of secondary passivation on corrosion behavior and semiconducting properties of passive film of 2205 duplex stainless steel

Guangming Yang et al.

Summary: The study on the effects of secondary passivation on the electrochemical behavior of passive films on the surface of 2205 duplex stainless steel showed that secondary passivation improved pitting resistance, compactness, stability, and reduced donor density of the passive film. Additionally, it inhibited the adsorption of Cl- and SO42 on the passive film surface.

Modeling Atmospheric Corrosion under Dynamic Thin Film Electrolyte

L. Saberi et al.

Summary: This study presents a model to predict the electrolyte film thickness under dynamic environmental conditions, and also predicts the corrosion of AA7075-T6 under dynamic film thickness. The effects of factors like relative humidity, temperature, and salt load density on film thickness were studied, showing good agreement with experimental data.
