Synthesis and characterization of niobium doped bismuth titanate

G. Hernandez-Cuevas et al.

Summary: Pure and niobium doped bismuth titanate ceramics were prepared by sol-gel method and sintered using pressureless sintering and spark plasma sintering techniques. The substitution of titanium by niobium caused distortion in the structure. The incorporation of niobium into the bismuth titanate ceramic structure was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction revealed no secondary phases and indicated crystallographic texturing due to the spark plasma sintering technique. Scanning electron microscopy showed the influence of niobium on grain shape and size. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops demonstrated the effect of niobium and texturing on ferroelectric behavior. Higher values of remanent polarization were reported for pressureless sintered samples, while higher values of relative permittivity were reported for spark plasma sintered samples.

Exploration of impurity migration behavior in the process of lanthanum purification by Czochralski method

Yixuan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the Czochralski (Cz) method was introduced for the purification of rare earth metal La to improve its purification efficiency. The migration behavior of Al, Fe, and Ni impurities during the purification process was investigated. The equilibrium separation coefficients k(0) of Al, Fe, and Ni were calculated and it was found that these impurities would be concentrated in the melt and removed by the Cz method. The effect of pulling speed on the effective separation coefficient k(eff) of these impurities was also examined, showing that slower pulling speeds result in higher impurity removal efficiency. Purification experiments demonstrated that a pulling speed of 0.3 mm/min achieved the lowest residual rates of Al and Fe impurities in La (40% and 45.65% respectively), and reduced Ni and Ca impurities to below 10 ppm.wt. The Cz method effectively increased the purity of La from 99.97 wt% to over 99.995 wt%.

Effect of rare earth doping on magnetic and dielectric properties of NiZnMn ferrites

Xueyun Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, RE0.01Ni0.3Zn0.4Mn0.3Fe2O4 (RE=Fe, La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Yb) ferrites with precisely controlled composition were prepared. It was found that the lattice constant decreases with the increase of atomic number of rare earth. The infrared spectra showed changes in the tetrahedral and octahedral bonds. The introduction of rare earth slightly reduced the saturation magnetization and initial permeability, but had the same effect on Ms. These ferrites exhibited spin glass state or superparamagnetism at high temperature, and Sm, Gd, and Dy doped ferrites displayed unique dielectric properties.

Effects of annealing in vacuum on the microstructure of silicon-containing calcium phosphate films deposited on a ZrNb alloy by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering

Maria Surmeneva et al.

Summary: Coatings of pure crystalline hydroxyapatite (HA) or silicon-containing HA (Si-HA) were deposited on a ZrNb alloy surface by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The coated samples were heated in a vacuum furnace, and the effect of Si addition to HA on the crystallization behavior and structure of the films was analyzed. The Si substitution played a major role in the mechanisms of coating formation and crystallization behavior, influencing the structure and crystallinity of the deposited layers. The surface-induced crystallization of the thin films was found to be more pronounced than internal crystallization.

First-principles calculation of lattice distortions in four single phase high entropy alloys with experimental validation

Summary: A comparative study of high entropy alloys using ab initio calculations reveals intricate interdependence among electronic structure, interatomic bonding, partial charge distribution, and mechanical properties. The novel parameter of total bond order density (TBOD) is used to interpret the properties, with highest TBOD found in Cantor alloy NiFeCoCrMn. Experimental validation shows lattice distortions in NiFeCoCrMn and NiFeCoCrPd based on atomic radii variations. Modeling of Cu and Pd clustering in the supercell demonstrates lower total energy, consistent with observed enhancements in Cu and Pd-induced concentration wave in HEAs.

An octacoordinated Nb atom in the NbAl8H8+ cluster

Summary: The NbAl8H8+ cluster was formed in a molecular beam and characterized by mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations show the lowest-energy isomer is a high symmetry singlet with the Nb atom placed at the center of a distorted hexagonal Al ring and coordinated by two AlH moieties, therefore exhibiting octacoordination. The unprecedented high-symmetric geometry is attributed to the 20 valence electrons; the central Nb atom adheres to the 18-electron rule and two additional delocalized electrons stabilize the hexagonal ring.
