Applying the HIV Prevention Cascade to an Evaluation of a Large-Scale Combination HIV Prevention Programme for Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa

Kate Bergh et al.

Summary: Adolescent girls and young women in South Africa are at a higher risk of acquiring HIV compared to their male counterparts. Using the HIV prevention cascade framework, this study examined the steps to and barriers of effective use of male condoms and oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among this population. The findings highlight the need for risk reduction counseling interventions and easy access to condoms and PrEP.

Summary: This study investigated the association between young women's participation in a combination HIV-prevention intervention and their access to and use of condoms and other contraceptives. The findings suggest that participating in such interventions may lead to increased access and use of condoms and other methods of contraception among adolescent women. However, no associations were observed in the age group 20-24.

As a Young Pregnant Girl ... The Challenges You Face: Exploring the Intersection Between Mental Health and Sexual and Reproductive Health Amongst Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa

Zoe Duby et al.

Summary: Research shows that adolescent girls and young women in South Africa face mental health stressors and lack sufficient support, which intersect with sexual and reproductive health challenges to heighten their vulnerability. The bidirectional and interconnected vulnerability towards early pregnancy, HIV infection and poor mental health among South African AGYW is highlighted, suggesting the need for integrating mental health components into sexual and reproductive health interventions.
