Monitoring the curing process of in-situ concrete with piezoelectric-based techniques - A practical application

Zi Sheng Tang et al.

Summary: This study presents the first field application of electromechanical impedance (EMI) and wave propagation (WP) techniques for monitoring concrete curing, using smart aggregate (SA) sensors. The results obtained from EMI and WP techniques were consistent and comparable to destructive compression and non-destructive ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests. The study also presents semi-analytical models for quantifying the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete at different curing durations.

Bonding performance monitoring between CFRP and timber column interfaces based on piezoelectric ceramics

Wenwei Yang et al.

Summary: To solve the problem of the difficulty in directly measuring the bond strength between carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite material and timber column during the process of strengthening, a real-time monitoring method based on piezoelectric ceramic active sensing is proposed to determine the bond strength through the structural response signal. Fifteen specimens were designed for testing and the monitoring signals were analyzed using wavelet packets, power spectral density, and short-time Fourier transform. It was found that the amplitude and power spectral density of the signals increased with the reinforcement time. The mapping relationship between wavelet packet energy and bond strength was obtained, providing a more efficient and robust way to monitor the bond strength between CFRP and timber columns during reinforcement.

Monitoring mechanical behaviors of CLT connections under reciprocating loading based on PZT-enabled active sensing and machine learning algorithms

Weihang Gao et al.

Summary: Monitoring the mechanical behaviors of cross-laminated timber (CLT) connections is crucial for assessing the condition of timber structures. Previous research has shown that Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT)-enabled active sensing approaches are effective for monitoring structural health under monotonic loads, but their effectiveness under reciprocating loads needs further investigation. This study proposes an innovative method that integrates PZT-enabled active sensing and eight machine learning (ML) approaches to monitor the mechanical behaviors of CLT connections under reciprocating loading. Cyclic loading tests demonstrate the superior capabilities of the proposed method compared to conventional PZT-enabled active sensing approaches.

Automatic defect depth estimation for ultrasonic testing in carbon fiber reinforced composites using deep learning

Xiaoying Cheng et al.

Summary: This work proposes an automatic signal classification method based on deep learning for depth estimation of low-velocity impact (LVI) damage in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). Three types of neural networks, LSTM, CNN, and CNNLSTM, are used to analyze the attributes at different depths and identify the depth information of impact damage. The results show that the CNN-LSTM model is more accurate in-depth classification for LVI defects in CFRP based on A-scan signals compared to the other two structures.
