Clayey soil stabilization using alkali-activated volcanic ash and slag

Hania Miraki et al.

Summary: This research explored the potential of using alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and volcanic ash (VA) as green binders in clayey soil stabilization projects. The results demonstrated that the coexistence of GGBS and VA in geopolymerization process was more effective, resulting in better performance against wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles. Additionally, the alkali-activated mixtures showed low carbon footprints.

Effects of sodium chloride on the mechanical strength of alkali activated volcanic ash and slag pastes under room and elevated temperatures

Pooria Ghadir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of sodium chloride on the microstructural and mechanical properties of alkali activated volcanic ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and Portland cement pastes. The results showed that samples with 100% slag exhibited the highest mechanical strength, while the strength of samples with 100% volcanic ash was not significantly affected by sodium chloride. Under high temperature conditions, the addition of sodium chloride increased the strength of samples with 50% and 100% slag, as well as Portland cement pastes, up to a certain concentration, but further addition reduced their strength. However, under room temperature conditions, the compressive strength of samples with 50% and 100% slag, as well as Portland cement samples, decreased with the addition of sodium chloride.

Mechanical Strength of Saline Sandy Soils Stabilized with Alkali-Activated Cements

Hamid Reza Razeghi et al.

Summary: Saline soils are known as problematic soils worldwide due to their inappropriate geotechnical properties. This study investigates the microstructural and mechanical properties of alkali-activated volcanic ash/slag-stabilized sandy soil in the presence of NaCl. The results show that alkali-activated slag can be a sustainable alternative to Portland cement for soil stabilization projects in saline environments. Microstructural analyses reveal the formation of gels that reduce porosity and increase mechanical strength in samples containing slag and volcanic ash.

Summary: This research evaluates the technoeconomic performance of alkali-activated slag (AAS) concrete compared to ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete, analyzing workability, compressive strength, CO2 emission, and material cost. Regression analyses are used to model consistency and strength of the mixtures, with a multiresponse optimization method introduced to maximize strength while minimizing cost and CO2 emission, identifying optimal mixture proportions. The results show that workable AAS mixtures with high strength and lower CO2 emissions can be produced while maintaining a reasonable increase in material cost.
