Relationship between microstructure and phase morphology of SBS modified bitumen with processing parameters studied using atomic force microscopy

Derya Kaya Ozdemir et al.

Summary: The aging effects of varying processing parameters, mixing time, and shear speed on SBS modified bitumen morphology and phase structure were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM).The inclusion of SBS and varying processing parameters provide differences in topographic and phase images of bitumen, with the contrast between phases becoming more distinct with increasing mixing time and speed.

Variation of internal structure and performance of polyethylene- and polypropylene-modified bitumen during blending process

Luca Desidery et al.

Summary: The study found that the type and form of polyolefin have a significant impact on the mechanical response time of the composite material during the blending process of polyethylene, polypropylene, and bitumen. Polyethylene shows higher affinity with bitumen and produces modified bitumen with acceptable performance after blending for 210 minutes.

Laboratory investigation on rheological, chemical and morphological evolution of high content polymer modified bitumen under long-term thermal oxidative aging

Yu Tian et al.

Summary: Through various tests, it was found that High Content Polymer Modified Bitumen (HCPMB) exhibits different characteristics during aging compared to traditional bitumen. The degradation of polymer and oxidation of bitumen phase are the main factors affecting long-term aging, and a better developed initial polymer network leads to a slower degradation rate of polymer, extending the early stage of aging.

Analysis of asphaltenes and maltenes before and after long-term aging of bitumen

Xiaohu Lu et al.

Summary: The study shows differences in asphaltene and maltene of bitumen before and after aging, including the presence of more wax in maltene, the transfer of carbonyl and sulfoxide signals, and differences in aromaticity. The major differences are found between asphaltene and maltene in the bitumen.

Effect of Waste Polyethylene and Wax-Based Additives on Bitumen Performance

Luca Desidery et al.

Summary: The practice of replacing traditional polymer modifiers with waste plastics has gained increasing interest in recent years, especially with polyethylene-based plastics showing promising potential in bitumen modification. Additionally, the chain length of waxes, the form of added waste polyethylene, and the blending protocol have critical effects on the properties of the mixture.

A novel method for determining the time-temperature superposition relationship of SBS modified bitumen: Effects of bitumen source, modifier type and aging

Zihao Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the factors affecting the validity of the newly proposed method for determining the time-temperature superposition relationship of SBSMB. It is found that the method is applicable to SBSMB samples prepared by different bitumen sources and modifier types, but not suitable for aged samples.

Comparison of quantitative determination for SBS content in SBS modified asphalt

Song Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, three calibration curves were established for detecting SBS content in modified asphalt, and compared the physical property method, rheological property method, and FTIR method. The results indicate that the FTIR method has the highest accuracy and correlation with SBS content, and shows many advantages compared to the other two methods.

Glass transitions in bituminous binders

Panos Apostolidis et al.

Summary: The inter-laboratory program investigated the phase and interphase behavior of bituminous binders using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to evaluate the low temperature properties. The study focused on comparing the glass transition temperature (T-g) measured by conventional temperature linear-DSC (TL-DSC) and temperature modulation-DSC (TM-DSC) methods, and found that the modification by 7.5% SBS resulted in a decrease of T-g, reflecting the positive influence of SBS at low temperatures.

The Effect of Ageing on Chemical and Strength Characteristics of Nanoclay-Modified Bitumen and Asphalt Mixture

Hend Ali Omar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of ageing on bitumen, before and after modification, by producing nano-clay modified bitumen and conducting various tests. The results showed that the modification of bitumen using nano-clay improved the ageing resistance of the binder, as reflected in the strength of the asphalt mixture. FTIR analysis and ITS tests further confirmed the enhancement of ageing resistance in the modified bitumen mixture.
