Studies on the validity of strain sensors for pavement monitoring: A case study for a fiber Bragg grating sensor and resistive sensor

Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method of combining indoor experiments with finite element simulations to analyze the validity of strain sensors in asphalt pavement. The results show that FE simulation is feasible for simulating strain in asphalt mixtures with sensors, and FBG sensors are more suitable for measuring horizontal strain. The effectiveness of FE simulation is also demonstrated in long-term dynamic loading tests.

Summary: A new crack analysis method based on Brillouin scattering spectrum (BSS) data is proposed to overcome the spatial resolution limitation in conventional strain measurement, successfully locating cracks and measuring sub-millimeter cracks in wood board and concrete overlay experiments. The method demonstrates accuracy in crack strain quantification and capability to locate cracks less than 0.1 mm wide using a Brillouin-DFOS system with 750 mm spatial resolution.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation compatibility between embedded strain sensor and asphalt mixture, and proposes design requirements. The results indicate that the deformation compatibility between the sensor and pavement material changes at different temperatures. To ensure favorable deformation compatibility, a strain sensor with lower equivalent modulus (EM) is recommended for dynamic response monitoring.

Improvement of Performance for Raman Assisted BOTDR by Analyzing Brillouin Gain Spectrum

Qiang Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simplified partitioned Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) analysis method to improve the spatial resolution and measurement accuracy of a Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometer (BOTDR) with the assistance of a first-order Raman pump. The authors derive a mathematical model of the partitioned BGS and analyze the superposition process of sub-Brillouin signals within a theoretical spatial resolution range. By unifying unknown constant parameters, the authors simplify the analysis method and determine the uniform parameter through system test data and numerical analysis. In addition, the study automates data processing and determines the starting point of temperature/strain change based on the first occurrence of maximum Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) to obtain the calculation starting position of the partitioned BGS analysis method. Experimental results show that using a 100 ns probe pulse and the partitioned BGS analysis method, a spatial resolution of 0.4 m is achieved in a 78.45-km-long Raman-assisted BOTDR system, significantly improving the measurement accuracy. Furthermore, a strain accuracy of 5.6 με and a spatial resolution of 0.4 m are achieved in a 28.5-km-long BOTDR system without Raman amplification.

Identification of external load information using distributed optical fiber sensors embedded in an existing road pavement

Samim Mustafa et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the field applications of distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) for monitoring traffic load on existing roads. By conducting field tests with different embedment depths and moving loads, it was found that Rayleigh scattering-based Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) was an effective technology with high spatial resolution for monitoring dynamic responses due to moving loads. Additionally, a data-processing method using a combination of Hampel identifier and low-pass filter proved to be successful in removing outliers and noise from the raw measurement data, allowing for accurate and reliable traffic data collection.
