Effects of recycled sand and nanomaterials on ultra-high performance concrete: Workability, compressive strength and microstructure

Yuan Feng et al.

Summary: An economic and effective approach to optimize the performance of recycled sand ultra-high performance concrete (RSUHPC) is developed in this study. The addition of nanomaterials can significantly counteract the negative impact of increasing recycled sand content on the compressive performance of RSUHPC. Based on the consideration of performance improvement and economic cost, a content of 25% recycled sand and 1% nanomaterials is found to be optimal for RSUHPC.

Liming Li et al.

Summary: Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are potential substitutes for ordinary Portland cement due to their better properties and lower carbon footprint. This review focuses on the setting behaviours of two types of AAMs prepared from ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and metakaolin (MK). The study discusses the effects of chemical compositions of precursors, activators, and retarders on the setting times, strengths, and workabilities of AAMs, and provides advice for better application.

Workability, compressive strength, and microstructures of one-part rubberized geopolymer mortar

Jianbai Zhao et al.

Summary: A one-part rubberized geopolymer mortar (ORGM) activated by a solid alkali activator was developed and compared with a two-part rubberized geopolymer mortar (TRGM). The ORGM activated by anhydrous Na2SiO3 powder showed superior economic and environmental benefits. Despite a reduction in compressive strength due to the addition of rubber, the ORGM-NS with a 10% rubber content still exhibited a 28-day compressive strength approximately 170% higher than the ORGM-NH. The ORGM has similar functional cost, a more convenient preparation method, and a slower polymerization process compared to TRGM.

Compressive behaviour and microstructures of concrete incorporating pretreated recycled powder/aggregates: The coupling effects of calcination and carbonization

Baifa Zhang et al.

Summary: The use of recycled powder, recycled fine aggregate, and recycled coarse aggregate can adversely affect the performance of cement-based materials. However, pretreatment of the recycled materials (calcination and carbonization) improves their physical and chemical properties, especially in the case of recycled coarse aggregate. Calcination at 400 degrees C with carbonization for 6 hours is found to be the optimal pretreatment, leading to improved mechanical properties of recycled concrete.

Concrete improvement incorporating recycled powder and aggregates treated via a combination of calcination and carbonation: The impact behaviors

Yuan Feng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the quality of recycled concrete by optimizing the combined calcination and carbonation pretreatment of recycled powder and aggregates. The results showed that calcination at 400°C (for powder at 600°C) and carbonation for 24 hours significantly improved the performance of the materials and reduced their negative impact on the impact resistance of the concrete. XRD and SEM results indicated a stronger bond between the matrix and recycled material, as well as an improved interfacial transition zone. Furthermore, a predictive model for the dynamic increase factor of the concrete under impact loading was proposed based on the recycled materials.

Utilization of Calcium Carbide Residue as Solid Alkali for Preparing Fly Ash-Based Geopolymers: Dependence of Compressive Strength and Microstructure on Calcium Carbide Residue, Water Content and Curing Temperature

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: Calcium carbide residue (CCR) was used as an activator to prepare fly ash (FA)-based geopolymers without additional alkali. The mechanical property of FA/CCR-based geopolymers was influenced by factors such as FA/CCR ratio, curing temperature, and water/binder ratio. By optimizing these factors, the FA/CCR mixture showed great potential as a cementitious material and geopolymer with a dense microstructure and a maximal compressive strength of 17.5 MPa.

Summary: The ASR behavior of AAS/AAFA mortars was investigated and compared with OPC mortars, revealing that ASR-induced expansion in AAS mortar bars occurred earlier than in OPC mortar bars due to the early participation of reactive silica from aggregates in alkali-activation. The Ca/Si ratio of amorphous ASR products in AAS mortars was lower, while Al/Si and Na/K ratios were higher than that of OPC mortars.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different aggregate combinations on the long-term mechanical and shrinkage properties of fully recycled aggregate concrete (FRAC). It was found that using fully recycled aggregate combinations had negative effects on the concrete properties, and the effect caused by fully recycled aggregate combination was higher than the sum of the effects caused by fully recycled coarse aggregate and fully recycled fine aggregate combination. Additionally, the study examined the impact of recycled powder (RP) on FRAC properties and found that RP content affected the mechanical properties and shrinkage strain of FRAC.
