Understanding the field performance of asphalt binders in continental climates through modulated differential scanning calorimetry

Justin Sandrasagra et al.

Summary: A pavement trial in northern Ontario, Canada has revealed the significant influence of asphalt modification on pavement performance in continental climate regions. The study found that different modification types and doses can lead to differences in expected lifespan of over 15 years. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry was used to analyze the trial binders and aged residues, shedding light on the mechanisms that affect field performance. The results showed that the use of recycled engine oil bottom (REOB) tainted asphalt and high styrene-butane-styrene (SBS) content can negatively impact lifespan, while straight Cold Lake binder with 0.3% PET fiber modification performed the best with an expected lifespan of 38 years.

The effect of long-term aging on fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures

Shashwath Sreedhar et al.

Summary: Asphalt aging is a significant factor causing cracking failures in asphalt pavements. Due to the increasing complexity of asphalt mixture composition and interactions, relying solely on volumetric design does not result in optimal performance. Therefore, it is necessary to improve test methods for asphalt mixture performance and develop more durable mixtures.

Effect of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber on the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures

Jianmin Ma et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the effects of PET fiber and asphalt mixture properties, as well as testing conditions, on the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. It was found that longer and thicker PET fibers with a rough surface can significantly improve the toughness of the asphalt mixtures. The loading rate in the current test method should be reduced.

On the sustainable use of recycled plastics in flexible asphalt pavements

Jianmin Ma et al.

Summary: Reusing plastic waste in asphalt for road construction has potential environmental and economic benefits. However, research has conflicting conclusions about its merits. This report presents test results on plastic-modified binders and mixtures, finding improved high temperature binder grades, but reduced strain tolerance in ductile failure. Modified mixes were less strain tolerant in comparison to unmodified mixes. Adjusting the base asphalt grade is proposed to accommodate more plastic and improve overall performance.

Lessons learned from 60 years of pavement trials in continental climate regions of Canada

Jianmin Ma et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of consistency, temperature sensitivity, phase homogeneity, and durability of asphalt binders in pavement performance. It is found that optimizing the binder formulation can lead to the design of longer-lasting pavements, providing substantial savings and preparing for climate change.

Investigation of low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures by conducting Disc-Shaped Compact Tension (DC(T)) and Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) tests

Saeid Salehi Ashani et al.

Summary: This study focused on investigating the low-temperature cracking resistance of five plant-produced SP12.5 surface course asphalt mixtures through DC(T), SCB, and BBR tests. Results showed that DC(T) fracture energies had better relationships with the low-temperature properties of recovered asphalt binders, providing a more reliable method for evaluating the low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures.

Development of a balanced cracking index for asphalt mixtures tested in semi-circular bending with load-LLD measurements

Hamed Majidifard et al.

Summary: A new cracking index BCI was introduced in this study, showing lower coefficient of variation and higher correlation compared to existing indices FI and CRI. BCI is driven by both fracture energy and L75 parameter, suggesting potential value in predicting cracking performance of asphaltic pavement surfaces.
