Mechanical Properties and Durability of Geopolymer Recycled Aggregate Concrete: A Review

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the research on Geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GPRAC), including its mechanical properties, durability, and microscopic aspects. It is found that GPRAC can be improved by factors such as curing temperature, precursor materials, fibers, nanoparticles, and mix ratios. Using multiple precursor materials tends to show better performance. Furthermore, using modified recycled aggregates can reduce porosity and water absorption. The results show that GPRAC meets engineering requirements and has advantages over traditional concrete in terms of reducing carbon emissions and environmental pollution.

Damage characteristics and constitutive model of phosphogypsum/fly ash/slag recycled aggregate concrete under uniaxial compression

Yichao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a phosphogypsum/fly ash/slag (PFS) composite was used to replace ordinary Portland cement and produce PFS recycled aggregate concrete (PFSRAC). The mechanical properties and damage characteristics of PFSRAC were investigated through uniaxial compression tests and in-situ X-ray computed tomography. The results showed that the combination of PFS and recycled aggregate had a significant effect on the compressive strength of PFSRAC. The densification of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the PFS matrix and recycled aggregate contributed to the increased compressive strength.

Sodium sulphate resistance of geopolymer mortar produced using ground ferronickel slag with fly ash

Jhutan Chandra Kuri et al.

Summary: This study examined the durability of geopolymer mortar made from ground ferronickel slag (GFNS) and fly ash (FA) after being immersed in 5% sodium sulphate solution for 1.5 years. The results showed that the compressive strength of the samples increased after the immersion. The geopolymer mortar containing 75% GFNS exhibited the highest compressive strength after exposure to sulphate. The presence of stable sodium magnesium alumino-silicate hydrate (NMASH) product was attributed to the high strength of the FA-GFNS geopolymer.

Sulfate resistance of class C/class F fly ash geopolymers

Zhenzhen Jiao et al.

Summary: The effects of water-to-fly ash ratio (W/FA), class C fly ash (CF) content, and alkaline content on the setting times and compressive strength of geopolymer pastes were investigated. The results showed that higher CF contents led to shorter setting times and higher compressive strength. All geopolymer samples exhibited a small weight change after exposure to an MgSO4 solution. The low strength geopolymer showed better resistance to sulfate attack due to its increase in compressive strength and decrease in ultrasonic flight-time.

Investigation of physical, chemical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of cement-less concrete-state-of-the-art review

Balamurali Kanagaraj et al.

Summary: Geo-polymer concrete (GPC) is produced through chemical reactions between industrial products and naturally occurring alumino silicate sources. However, there is a lack of standardized guidelines for mix production, limiting the acceptance of geo-polymer in the industry. Unlike cement concrete, GPC's properties are influenced by various factors such as the ratio of alkaline liquid to cementitious material, alkaline activator ratio, binder type, and curing type. This paper provides an overview of the chemistry behind GPC, alumino-silicate sources, and the microstructural analysis of binders under different curing conditions.

Effect of the use of waste glass (as precursor, and alkali activator) in the manufacture of geopolymer rendering mortars and architectural tiles

Laura M. Henao Rios et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of CDW, which accounts for nearly half of the solid wastes sent to landfills, is significant. Glass wastes, although 100% recyclable, have a low recycling rate in the United States compared to Europe. This research evaluates the use of waste glass in geopolymers and finds that the strength of the resulting materials depends on the type of activator and the percentage of glass used.

Reaction mechanism of sulfate attack on alkali-activated slag/fly ash cements

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the effects of slag/fly ash ratios, Na2O concentration, and silicate modulus on the reaction mechanism of sulfate attack on alkali-activated slag/fly ash cements using XRD, FTIR, and TG/DTG analysis. The results showed that MgSO4 attack on AACs was severe due to alkali dissolution and Mg2+ intrusion, whereas Na2SO4 attack did not significantly alter the C-A-S-H gel structures of AACs. Additionally, the resistance of NaOH-activated slag to MgSO4 was higher compared to Na2SiO3-activated slag, but this trend reversed with an 80% fly ash replacement level.

Geometrical, physical, mechanical, and compositional characterization of recycled concrete aggregates

Miras Mamirov et al.

Summary: Recycling offers benefits in minimizing waste, but the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is limited due to the absence of effective characterization. This study aims to develop a testing protocol to characterize RCA and has achieved a better understanding of its properties. The success of the study will encourage the use of RCA in concrete production.

Long-term shrinkage and mechanical properties of fully recycled aggregate concrete: Testing and modelling

Hanghua Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different aggregate combinations on the long-term mechanical and shrinkage properties of fully recycled aggregate concrete (FRAC). It was found that using fully recycled aggregate combinations had negative effects on the concrete properties, and the effect caused by fully recycled aggregate combination was higher than the sum of the effects caused by fully recycled coarse aggregate and fully recycled fine aggregate combination. Additionally, the study examined the impact of recycled powder (RP) on FRAC properties and found that RP content affected the mechanical properties and shrinkage strain of FRAC.

Experimental study on the early-age properties of cement pastes with recycled brick powder

Xu Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that the replacement ratio of recycled brick powder (RBP) is inversely proportional to the hydration heat, and the particle size of RBP plays a crucial role in the hydration process of cement. Incorporating RBP reduces the flowability of the cement paste, increases the yield stress and viscosity, and delays the setting time.

Chemical-physical-mechanical stability of MKG mortars under sulfate attacks

Dongming Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stability of metakaolin-based geopolymer mortars under the actions of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate solutions for up to 180 days. The results showed that the immersion actions did not significantly change the mass, dimensions, or strengths of the geopolymer mortars. However, white deposits appeared on the surfaces of specimens exposed to magnesium sulfate solution, and Mg-Na exchanges occurred in the mortars. Overall, the stability of geopolymer-based materials depends on the material components and interactions with the environment, requiring further investigation for engineering applications.

Insights to the sulfate resistance and microstructures of alkali-activated metakaolin/slag pastes

Huajun Zhu et al.

Summary: Substitution of metakaolin with slag increased precursor reactivity, leading to higher reaction rates and improved mechanical properties and sulfate resistance in alkaliactivated cement. The development of gel phases and pore structures, as well as the generation of C-A-S-H, contribute to the better sulfate resistance and more compact microstructure observed with higher slag content. An optimal replacement level of 30 wt% metakaolin was identified for improved sulfate resistance and prevention of potential ettringite damage in practical applications.
