Effects of w/b ratio, fly ash, limestone calcined clay, seawater and sea-sand on workability, mechanical properties, drying shrinkage behavior and micro-structural characteristics of concrete

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: There is a global shortage of fresh water and river sand due to the high demand for concrete in the construction industry. This study investigates the use of seawater and sea sand as alternatives to alleviate these shortages and achieve sustainable development. The results show that the addition of seawater and sea sand improves the early compressive strength but decreases the workability and later strength of the concrete. The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can enhance the overall performance of seawater and sea sand concrete (SSC), with certain SCMs showing superior microstructural properties. This study provides valuable insights into the utilization of seawater and sea sand in concrete and the impact of SCMs on SSC.

Experimental and analytical investigation on chloride ions transport in concrete considering the effect of dry-exposure ratio under diurnal tidal environment

Yuanzhan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between dry-wet ratio and chloride ion transport in reinforced concrete structures in tidal zone. A new index, dry-exposure ratio, is proposed to quantify the dry-wet cycle environment. The most unfavorable dry-exposure ratio is determined and the mechanism of convection and its influence on chloride ions transport are discussed.

Effect of exposure temperatures on chloride penetration resistance of concrete incorporating polypropylene Fibers, silica fume and metakaolin

Khaled A. Alawi Al-Sodani

Summary: This study investigated the effects of polypropylene fibers, metakaolin and silica fume on chloride diffusion and migration resistance of concrete. The results showed significant reduction in apparent chloride diffusion coefficient and chloride migration coefficient for both silica fume and metakaolin. However, the concrete incorporating metakaolin and polypropylene fibers had inferior chloride diffusion compared to that containing silica fume.

Experimental investigation on chloride-ion penetration resistance of slag containing fiber-reinforced concrete under drying-wetting cycles

Weige Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chloride penetration resistance of fiber-reinforced concrete with slag as cement replacement. The results showed that slag has a positive effect on the resistance, but the impact of macrofibers and microfibers varies. Steel fibers can improve the resistance against chloride ion penetration, while polypropylene macrofibers can exacerbate it. The effects of microfibers depend on the type and volume fraction, with lower fractions being favorable.

Numerical and experimental research on the effect of rainfall on the transporting behavior of chloride ions in concrete

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of rainfall on chloride ion transport behavior in concrete through experiments and numerical simulations. Results showed that as rainfall intensity and duration increased, the chloride ion content on the concrete surface decreased, weakening the binding capacity of chloride ions in the matrix.

The corrosion resistance of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) containing high-volume fly ash and low-volume bentonite against the combined action of sulfate attack and dry-wet cycles

Xiaoyi Quan et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of ECC was studied with different ratios, showing that adding bentonite can improve the material's pore structure and performance. ECC with a FA/C of 1.8 and a bentonite content of 3% exhibited the best corrosion resistance.

Numerical model of the effect of water vapor environment on the chloride transport in concrete

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of chloride transmission in concrete structures exposed to marine environments, finding the impact of different drying-wetting ratios on the distribution of chloride ions, and established a numerical model based on Fick's second law to predict the chloride ion concentration dynamics over time. Experiment data and simulation results showed a good correlation in predicting chloride diffusion.

Investigation on mechanical and micro properties of concrete incorporating seawater and sea sand in carbonized environment

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the mechanical and micro properties of seawater and sea sand concrete under accelerated carbonization. It was found that seawater and sea sand concrete had higher compressive strength compared to ordinary concrete after standard curing, but showed similar mechanical strength after long-term accelerated carbonization. Additionally, the carbonation resistance of seawater and sea sand concrete was twice that of ordinary concrete, but decreased significantly when mineral admixtures FA and LC2 were added.

Prediction of chloride concentration with elevation in concrete exposed to cyclic drying-wetting conditions in marine environments

Xueli Ju et al.

Summary: Chloride ions play a significant role in the corrosion of steel bars in reinforced concrete structures exposed to cyclic drying-wetting conditions. An indoor experiment was conducted to investigate chloride transport under different drying-wetting ratios, leading to the development of a predictive model for chloride diffusion in concrete structures. This model was validated through experimental measurements, demonstrating its accuracy in predicting chloride concentrations at various elevations and exposure times.

Influence of the rainfall intensity on the chloride ion distribution in concrete with different levels of initial water saturation

Hesong Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the damage mechanism of reinforced concrete structures in coastal salt spray areas by simulating rainfall environment and conducting experiments, revealing changes in chloride ion concentration and loss. The results show that with higher rainfall intensity, the decrease in chloride ion concentration is more obvious, leading to more serious loss and weaker binding capacity.

Investigation of using limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) in engineered cementitious composites: The effect of propylene fibers and the curing system

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) and polypropylene fibers to create low-carbon ECCs results in a decrease in compressive strength with increasing PP fiber content, while showing better properties in terms of toughness, ductility, and energy absorption. The addition of PP fibers may lead to more internal defects and flaws in the microstructures of the composites.

Influence of deicing salt on the surface properties of concrete specimens after 20 years

Summary: This study investigated the diffusion and distribution of iodide ions in concrete under different conditions using the rapid chloride migration method. The results showed that an increase in water cement ratio leads to a greater depth of environmental effect and diffusion area of iodide ions in concrete. Silica fume and ground granulated blast furnace slag were found to impede the diffusion of iodide ions.
