A novel hybrid model to design fiber-reinforced shotcrete for tunnel linings

Marcello Congro et al.

Summary: This article presents a workflow for designing fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for tunnel linings, which includes the development of an artificial neural network and the design of a tunnel lining through numerical modeling. The neural network is used to predict the toughness of FRS based on input parameters such as concrete strength and fiber characteristics. The developed elastoplastic finite element model is then used to design a steel fiber-reinforced tunnel lining. The model results show good agreement with analytical solutions, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed workflow for designing FRS tunnel linings.

Macro-micro mechanical properties and reinforcement mechanism of alkali-resistant glass fiber-reinforced concrete under alkaline environments

Cong Zhang et al.

Summary: As a reinforced composite material, alkali-resistant glass fiber-reinforced concrete (AR-GFRC) is widely used in large-scale projects due to its advantages such as strong corrosion resistance, high tensile and impact resistance, high elastic modulus, and low cost. However, the mechanical properties and optimal ratio of AR-GFRC in complex environments such as strong alkaline, along with their meso-damage and failure mechanism, have not been fully understood. In this study, the tensile performance, microstructure, and reinforcement mechanisms of AR-GFRC under alkaline environments were investigated through splitting tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and numerical simulations.

Compressive stress-strain behavior of slag-based alkali-activated seawater coral aggregate concrete after exposure to seawater environments

Bai Zhang et al.

Summary: The use of coral aggregates can reduce the cost and construction time of offshore projects. However, the high chlorine salt content and porosity of coral aggregates can affect the durability of seawater coral aggregate concrete (CAC). This study investigated the stress-strain behavior of CAC and alkali-activated seawater coral aggregate concrete (AACAC) under different exposure times and environments, and found that AACAC had superior performance against seawater corrosion compared to CAC.

Characterizing the engineering properties of Marine Sand-Amended foamed lightweight Soil: Macroscopic and microscopic perspectives

Yun Que et al.

Summary: Mixing foamed lightweight soil (FLS) with marine sand (MS) can be a sustainable approach for maximizing waste resources. This study comprehensively explores the properties of MS-mixed FLS (MS-FLS) with different MS, chloride (Cl- ), and shell contents through macroscopic and microscopic experiments. The results reveal that MS-FLS exhibits fluidity, volumetric water-absorption rate, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) within certain ranges. The durability and microstructure of MS-FLS are affected by various factors such as wet cycling, freeze-thaw cycling, sulfate erosion, and long-term outdoor exposure.

Correlation between macroscopic properties and microscopic pore structure in steel-basalt hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composites subjected to elevated temperatures

Kai Cao et al.

Summary: Steel-basalt hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composites (SBFRCC) have been studied for their mechanical properties at room temperature, but their properties and correlations at elevated temperatures have not been well understood. This study investigated the macroscopic and microscopic properties of SBFRCC under elevated temperatures and analyzed their correlations using various tests and analysis methods. The results showed that steel and basalt fibers effectively restricted crack initiation and propagation under elevated temperatures. The uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus decreased with temperature, while peak strain increased up to 600 degrees C and then decreased. The pore structure also changed significantly with temperature. The correlation between uniaxial compressive strength and porosity was the highest, and the gel pore and large pore had the highest correlations with fracture and mass loss rate, respectively.

Natural fiber-reinforced shotcrete mixture: Quantitative assessment of the impact of fiber on fresh and plastic shrinkage cracking properties

Seunghak Choi et al.

Summary: The plastic stage of early-age shotcrete life is crucial for durability. Utilizing natural fibers is an effective strategy to extend the service life and mitigate plastic cracking. A statistical model (multiple regression model) was used to analyze the impact of fiber type, length, and content on mixture optimization. The results demonstrate that fiber integration creates a spatial network structure, greatly enhancing the shear resistance of the material. This fibrous network prevents plastic cracking by providing initial mechanical strength and a strong matrix to withstand shrinkage stress. Thus, a rheological model was proposed to characterize fiber mixtures with improved tensile strain capacity through viscosity and yield stress development.

The effects of steel, polypropylene, and high-performance macro polypropylene fibers on mechanical properties and durability of high-strength concrete

Haniyeh Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: The study compared the properties of high-strength and ordinary concrete with different types of fibers (PPFs, HPP fibers, and SF) under standard and sulfate curing conditions. The addition of PPF and SF reduced the workability of the mixtures containing supplementary cementitious material. The mixture with 1% SF and 0.2% PPF showed the highest compressive strength, while the mixture with 0.5% HPP fibers, 1% SF, and 0.2% PPF showed the highest tensile strength. The flexural strength was highest in the mixture with 0.5% HPP fibers and 1% SF. Fiber-reinforced concretes had lower 30-minute water absorption compared to non-fiber samples, with the sample containing 0.5% PPF and 20% silica fume showing the lowest absorption of 0.53%.

Haotian Li et al.

Summary: The study found that imitation steel fiber concrete has good compressive performance and energy absorption performance, with the best ratio of 0.4-0.6% fiber/mortar mass. The bond between steel fibers and the matrix can disperse stress and significantly improve the toughness of concrete. As the fiber content increases, the bridging effect of fibers becomes more obvious, and the ability of specimens to resist cracking improves significantly.
