Corrosion of Steel Fibers in Chloride-Contaminated Simulated Concrete Pore Solutions

Danying Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the corrosion behavior of steel fibers in NaCl solutions with different pH values. The corrosion rate of the steel fibers was determined by changes in diameter and ultimate tensile load, while the electrochemical parameters were continuously monitored. The results showed that the corrosion rate decreased as the pH of the NaCl solution increased, with very low corrosion observed at pH >= 12. The steel fibers exhibited high corrosion tendency and rate at pH <= 12, but low corrosion at pH = 13. Additionally, the surface roughness of the steel fibers only slightly increased after exposure to the NaCl solution with pH = 13 for 180 days.

Effect of chloride-induced corrosion on bond performance of various steel fibers in cracked SFRC

Xianlin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chloride-induced corrosion behavior of different types of steel fibers in cracked steel fiber reinforced concrete. The corrosion products on the fiber surfaces were observed using SEM and EDX techniques. Pull-out tests were conducted to evaluate the bond behavior of corroded fibers, considering factors such as fiber type, corrosion duration, crack width, and embedded length. Three different corrosion morphologies were identified on the surfaces of the fibers, leading to varied effects on bond strength. The results show that the bond strength of the fibers increases with crack width but decreases once the crack width exceeds a certain threshold.

Residual mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced concrete damaged by alkali silica reaction and subsequent sodium chloride exposure

Sara Farooq et al.

Summary: This research investigates the residual mechanical properties of plain and steel fiber reinforced concrete damaged by alkali silica reaction (ASR) and subsequent chloride ion ingress. The study found that steel fibers were effective in reducing surface crack widths and that exposure to a chloride environment aided in hydration reaction, counter-balancing the damage caused by ASR.

Mechanical property evolution and chloride transport of steel fiber-reinforced concrete exposed to simulated marine environments

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in simulated marine environments. The results showed that SFRC surfaces developed rust spots after 36 months of chloride attack, but the internal steel fibers remained intact. SFRC specimens immersed in 3% NaCl solution for 36 months did not experience decreases in their compressive and flexural strengths and toughness. Furthermore, SFRC specimens with 20% fly ash displayed higher chloride resistance compared to specimens with 20% fly ash and 40% slag.
