Durability of concrete coupled with life cycle assessment: Review and perspective

Chen Li et al.

Summary: Extending the service life of structures is crucial for mitigating environmental impacts, such as global warming. While the durability of reinforced concrete has been studied for decades, its impact on eco-efficiency has only recently gained attention. This review discusses the recent advances in durability-based life cycle assessment (LCA) and highlights the need for a unified methodology in this field. It proposes a framework that combines prescriptive and performance-based design methods to unify existing divergent methodologies and improve sustainability in engineering codes.

Graphene oxide classification and standardization

Katarzyna Z. Donato et al.

Summary: Given the increasing industrial use of graphene-related materials, it is necessary to classify and standardize them. Graphene oxide (GO) is one of the most used and difficult to classify materials. However, inconsistent definitions of GO are found in the literature and industrial brochures, which creates confusion. This lack of regulation and standardization leads to trust issues and hinders industrial development. This study critically assesses commercially available GOs and establishes correlations between their physicochemical properties and applications, providing a rationale for their classification.

Study on the Relationship between Fractal Characteristics and Mechanical Properties of Tensile Fracture of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Chenxu Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of tensile cracks in reinforced concrete structures through experiments, analyzing the fracture morphology and mechanical properties using fractal geometry theory and reverse engineering. The results show that the axial force of the tensile crack increases with the crack sequence. When the crack reaches a stable state, the number of cracks does not change, but the crack width increases. The fractures of the structural tensile crack exhibit distinct fractal characteristics and the fractal dimension decreases as the cracking axial force increases. The correlation between the crack axial force and the fractal dimension of the fracture follows a power function. The fractal dimension of the tensile crack is calculated to evaluate the tensile force of the structure. Timely measurements can prevent the embedded steel bars from yielding and causing a complete loss of bearing capacity in the structure.

Enhanced ohmic heating and chloride adsorption efficiency of conductive seawater cementitious composite: Effect of non-conductive nano-silica

Weichen Tian et al.

Summary: This study utilized nano-silica (NS) as a non-conductive nanofiller to promote the performance improvement of conductive seawater cementitious composite (NS-CSWCC) manufactured by ohmic heating (OH) curing. The results showed that NS greatly improved the heating efficiency of OH cured samples, and increasing the NS content enhanced the peak temperature and temperature-increase rate. Furthermore, NS addition improved the mechanical properties and Cl- binding ratio of the composite material.

Particle size distribution of aggregate effects on the reinforcing roles of carbon nanotubes in enhancing concrete ITZ

Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes can enhance the properties of concrete interfacial transition zone by promoting hydration product growth and refining the microstructure. Adjusting the aggregate gradation of concrete is crucial to maximize the reinforcement effects of CNTs. However, both low and high Talbot indices can weaken the reinforcement effects of CNTs on concrete ITZ characteristics.

Microstructure and durability performance of sustainable cementitious composites containing high-volume regenerative biosilica

Jiaqi Li et al.

Summary: This paper explores the potential of using biosilica as a byproduct from diatom-based biofuel production in cementitious materials. The study finds that replacing some portland cement with biosilica can improve the durability performance of the materials, although it may increase drying shrinkage. The research also demonstrates the feasibility of using biosilica as a sustainable cement substitute.

Particle size distribution of aggregates effects on mesoscopic structural evolution of cemented waste rock backfill

Jiangyu Wu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the mesoscopic structure of cemented waste rock backfill (CWRB) and found that the particle size distribution affects crack evolution, force chain structure, and particle fragment. The fractal dimension of crack distribution is correlated with the PSD of aggregates, and the strength of CWRB is related to the fractal dimension of crack distribution.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of basalt fiber content on the uniaxial compressive mechanical properties and damage of concrete. Acoustic emission technology was used to collect AE characteristic parameters, and 3D-digital image correlation was used to track surface crack development in real time. Results showed that proper basalt fiber content can improve compressive strength and reduce AE characteristic parameters, which are closely related to the stress-strain curve of BFRC.
